12v computer fans
Dont ditch those old desk top computers........the main 12v cooling fan works on overheating regulators..........this is my 3rd one and now my last........
Re: 12v computer fans
I love that little idea. Can you show us how you wired it in?
Re: 12v computer fans
Because they are very low amp rated, typically 0.15 to 0.25 amp, they can pretty much be wired to anything that is live when you switch ign on and also when its running........note: [some components have 2 live feeds 1 when ign on and 1 when running....i.e. one of the feeds is not live as soon as the engine starts].
Most bikes have live feed to starter motor solenoid when ign switched on and stays live when running, thats where mine is wired to.
Before fitted after a run you could not touch the reg it was so hot, now its just warm to touch.....no more 60 quid regs for this bike....
Its mostly old bikes that suffer with this!.....what bike you got?

Re: 12v computer fans
i was thinking of doing this to my R/R as i have gone through 3 of them so far but the last seems to be doing ok for the min. I was wondering what you class as a old bike mine is a k7 gsxr 750 and they all suffer very bad with the R/R

Re: 12v computer fans
Position of unit i think makes a difference.........mine is under the seat and although it is finned it just does not get the air flow, but it does now............
Re: 12v computer fans
mine is behind the radiator above the manifold not a very good place
Re: 12v computer fans
what about fusing ??? im thinking of the cold and wet weather getting into the fan
Re: 12v computer fans
Well it looks like it's definitely exposed to the water and elements. I'm assuming that the fan will continue to work after a little splash of rain but don't plan on leaving it exposed in the elements and last long..

Re: 12v computer fans
Cut away se of the wire and put in an in line fuse if worried, only a couple of quid, long run much cheaper and less hassle than swapping reg/rects. Used to change mine once a year on the VFR400. Great idea Skippy
