Just picked up on this thread - if you take the A30 from Salisbury to Stockbridge (it's a bit Roman and straight until you peel right at Lopcombe corner, following which it's far more interesting), go through Stockbridge and at the big roundabout take the B3049 to Winchester - much more fun than the onward A30 which is even straighter and more Roman than it was earlier, followed by the utter tedium of the A34 - you don't need to go anywhere near these, just go straight on at the roundabout onto the B3049, which is quite entertaining. A quick scoot through part of Winchester shouldn't be too arduous early-ish on a Sunday morning, and take the Alresford Road out and then join the A272 - top road but keep it reasonable, on a Sunday morning it could be Plod Central, dutifully meeting the targets set for them by the suits whose only interest is graphs and charts and the next promotion, rather than catching car drivers using hand-held phones...

When I went, there were 2 rozzer BMW 1700 s in situ. Just rolling around, up and down permanently. Saw one take off in a hurry - amazing acceleration.
Have you noticed that anyone going slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster is a maniac ?

As Scotty said, do not follow the obvious (satnav) route from Salisbury. It is interesting to go south from Salisbury on the A36 and cut across on the A305, via Dunbridge, Timsbury (not Somereset Timsbury!), Morestead and Corhampton.

we'll have to let Ian take all these options on board and formulate a route to end all routes.

Makes a lot of sense. Normally avoid the A36 which I guess is why its never occurred to me to go that way before but 9:30 on a Saturday morning it looks ideal.
Nice to stay away from Winchester too. A quick scoot usually turns into a lot of swearing if I go near the place.

Maybe Shaftesbury? Esso Garage on Ivy Cross roundabout (a350)??
Your route though so plan away and I'll meet wherever suits!!!
Thanks

Went up Saturday and tried to come back by ptolemyx's route and got lost - found some great roads in the process though (need to plot some directions off a proper map. Hate Google maps with a passion). Its a good route and much better than the A30 through Stockbridge.
After Morestead, rather than continuing down Belmore lane to the B3035, take the first left then right onto Downs Way. Its a shorter but a laugh. The last bit is called Wheely Down Rd. For good reason..

Sorry guys haven't kept this updated.

Will be meeting at Honiton for an early is start
Thinking of a quick mile munch up the 303, popping to shaftsbury for a pick up/fuel stop.
Then onto loomies

Then after breakfast aiming south down onto the 35 back towards west bay for a lunch/mid afternoon snack.

Will need someone to help with directons/leading once I'm lost. As no sat nav etc.

Am aiming on being up for breakfast at 1030 ish so will be back tracking from then for leaving times. Hope to have a few more finalised plans soon

Shared route
From Honiton to Shaftesbury via A30 and Foyle Hill.

1 hr 28 min in current traffic

For the best route in current traffic visit https://goo.gl/maps/msCcpZXgi3y" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Going honiton, Chard, crewkerne, yeovil and sherbourne will get you there as quick but give you some nice roads to play on.
