HELP! Unwanted adverts playing in background

Post by scorcher »

Got a bug of some kind or another ,although the anti virus stuff hasn't picked anything up and neither does a scan.Got adverts for normal day to day household stuff playing in the background. No pictures or anything ,just sound.Just starts up randomly for 10 secs or so,even when you're not signed into anything/browsing and its just "idling" on desktop. You wouldn't know it was there unless you have the volume up.Also get a info box come up randomly saying "last browsing session closed unexpectedly" with the options of "opening last page or go to home page" which freezes the page for a couple of seconds then carries on as normal. Also get this when initially signing in to the browser (IE8) even though the last browsing session was ok. Any ideas??

This sort of activity is consistent with software we loosely describe as Malware and is a form of a virus but is more of a hinderance/annoyance than destructive, it may however periodically hog some of your bandwith and slow down the computer.

Try this: http://www.malwarebytes.org/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; should detect and remove. Also check what you've got installed, a lot of free programs install additional stuff like Yahoo searchbar etc or worse. These will show up in your add/remove programs and can normally be uninstalled with any problems.

Installed the malware thingy and ran it it a few times, but it couldn't find anything. Seems like its something rooted deep inside that originates from Pinballcorp.com (a dodgy anoying advertising thing that self loads)after one of their little sign-in boxes popped up in the background that got by the pop up blocker. Can't see anything that relates to this if I go into add/remove programs so unable to remove like that. Any other ideas? :?
ETA..... tried doing a system restore but it won't let me do that either. Goes through the motions and shuts down ,then restarts and says it cant restore to that point. tried 6-7 times with same results.

May be something in the tool bar. Go into add/delete programs and uninstall anything that has search in the title. I am wondering if there is an ad playing in another window. Have you installed any new programs of late? There may be something attached known as bloatware. Bloatware is usually a search tool like "ask" or "google" I had one called bekko which I have just uninstalled.

Login to windows with administrative rights.
Start Windows Task Manager.
Select Processes tab.
Select tick box - Show processes from all users.
Click Memory column heading so that the list is ordered with the highest number at the top.

Now its a waiting game till the sound next plays where you should notice a task jumping right up the list ( if not to the top ), note the image name on the left this will identify the offending item. You may need to be quick depending on how long the sound lasts.

It may be possible to identify the offending item from the process list by experience, you would however need to provide the complete list for this.
