I gather that it's self-handicapping. The more you win, the further back you start.
Have you noticed that anyone going slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster is a maniac ?

Japanese speedway, been around for donkeys years. Don't know about now, but used to be one of their biggest gambling sports with millions of yen being bet on races.

That is the 2nd time I've seen that sport this week...and it makes me laugh..

They all look like, what I imagine, a race between a load of Herman Munster's would look like.

Twas indeed, but as with much 'gambling' it was fixed by the Yazuka.

Just goes to show if you want to go really quick round corners what you need to do is sit up straight, not lean off, no knee down. make sure you have wonky handle bars and use thin push bike tyres rather then motorbike tyres on a bike with no faring.

BTW, you can't use Photobucket to post on 3rd party sites anymore unless you pay $399 per year. None of the photos are showing!

Apparently there is a way round it, but anything you have posted as a link, over the last umpteen years, will now be blanked out. There are other options like Flickr (which I will be using, although the linking method is fiddly) or Imgur (which has been recommended). I won't be deleting my account because there are so many pictures there, but I won't be paying $399 either!

Like Moose said, all in the name of gambling.

The sport was covered in one of the On Any Sunday films, bikes at the time had British motors (looks like updated to ER6 type motors now), riders were taken to their bikes in a covered truck so they couldn't look at the crowd for bribes/result rigging, plus the spectators watched in silence.
