12th July Brands Hatch GP

Post by menzies3032 »

Hey all

I have booked up today to go to Brands Hatch GP on the 12th July I am booked into Middle 2 (its 4 groups)

Think Nick / Red5 will be joining me and maybe Dan (Drifter Dan) as well. Would be great to have some more friendly faces joining us.

There is a Mercure hotel that is just outside the gates of the track and it is an absolute must as a really nice hotel but also loads of older F1 stuff in the reception / bar area.

If you have not done Brands before then would highly recommend it, its not a cheap day at £225 per ticket but trust me after you have been you will not be disappointed as the place is epic, not just the track but all of the pits and surrounding grand stands its quite something to be riding round.

Hope to see some of you there with us. let me know below. :-bd

All of a sudden realised how close it is now.
Just booked the hotel as had not even done that.
Also need to sort out a connector cover for my airbag vest so i don't scratch the petrol tank again

Not only now booked the hotel but also done my needle point and made myself an anti scratch cover for the airbag vest so I’m not scratching up the tank.

Well as usual lots of videos on YouTube to follow.
Day went well and everybody left the right way up
It did rain on the last session so nobody went out but I think to be honest we were all totally knackered by then anyway.

Personally I have decided something about Brands.
1) Amount of people
We got told that Brands GP is only ever rented out 20 times per year for track day use. Hence 4 groups and all of them are totally packed and this makes the day toooooo busy. As usual we did suffer from red flags (even on sighting laps) there is just to many people trying to find room on the track and make progress. Every now and then running out of ability.

2) Value for money
Running 4 groups means less track time as you only get 6 session not 7 and the morning sessions are 20 minutes afternoon sessions are 15 minutes. Add to this it is the most expensive track for No Limits to rent its also the most expensive track to buy at over £200 for the day

3) Ability to overtake
I like to pride myself on being a true track day'er and not a racer. So i give people space I only over take when safe for me and for the person I am over taking and if the pass suddenly starts to look bad then i back out of it and try again on another section of the track. I never knowingly dive bomb anybody or take any bodies line. Treat as you want to be treated yourself. When i am at Donington, Cadwell or Oulton there are places on track which are clear "Passing places" might be on the brakes on on specific corner exit. BUT never dive bombing and taking peoples lines. At Brands you find yourself permanently going round a bend even the straights are actually bends and there are no real overtaking spots, The places you can overtake you have to be very forceful about it and you really need to push if your going to make progress. If you watch bike or car racing at Brands you see a lot of block passing and now i understand why. In a race you can pass but on track day etiquette not so much.

On the 4th session was starting to get quite worried. Myself, Dan, Nick and Duncan went out and were in a group when we had some real nutter's diving bombing us in very dodgy places. To the point of me having some guy on a CB500 with a do or die mentality that ended up bumping my handlebars / elbow on the way past me that then ran out of puff 2 seconds later and was repassed by me with a nice big gap whilst shouting expletives in my helmet.

For me not going to be in a rush to go back to Brands again. Have done it twice now, there is no denying the track and the grounds / stands are epic but at the same time Donington, Cadwell or Oulton offer (in my view) a better track experience at a reduce cost, with lower numbers of people and more track time for your money.

My mate that was up there said pretty much the same thing. Too many pregnant goldfishies causing red flags, and a lot of guys on track 😒

Just to add I found the track bumpy in the braking zones at the end of the straights bottoming out my stiffer than standard forks and Duncan and Dave also suffered this. Doni much smoother in my view apparently its been re-surfaced too.
