With the valves closed the compression is good again, so the next stage is to have the rocker arm and shaft spark eroded to get them out of the cam cover assembly, and replace them with new items, if all goes well it's a simple job, if however the spark eroding is not able to do it then it involves a new head as the cam cover is line bored with the head for the camshaft bearings. I'll keep you updated as the thing is being collected on Wednesday evening to be sparked.

keeeeerrrrrr.............ching

Post No. 2 in this thread .... "However, if you really have no compression, then it's likely to be either valves or piston .... "

Ah, "Smug - Mode" 8)

Let's hope the foloers come out OK, I guess a new head is likely to get a bit pricey - did you get a warranty when you bought it :?

Cost of the easier option comes in at around £350 to £400 inc labour, that however will more than double if a new head is required as a new head comes in at £475, and would require the valves swapping over from the old head, as well as a new follower and shaft. The old rocker arm is siezed onto the shaft and cannot be pressed out as there is nothing at the other end to get access, hence needing the thing spark eroding off. I looked to see whether I could get in there to cut the thing out with a slitting disc, but the access is too tight and risk of further damage too great, so sparking is the only option left.

Jam could you not drill a hole in the oppsoite side and punch out the shaft, then thread that hole and screw in a short bolt with copper washer to bung the hole?

Unfortunately not, the design of the rocker box means that although the other end of the shaft is visible into the cam tunnel, there is no way of getting something substantial enough to press it out in there. so tomorrow it will be collected by a chap who does all my engineering jobs who will spark erode it into a couple of pieces which will then allow removal of the remainder. He will also be getting the exhaust shaft and new inlet shaft to machine a shallow spiral along the length which will aid oil retention within the assembly, as I reckon there is a design flaw with the rocker arms and shafts as the only lubrication is via two 6mm holes on top of the rocker arm which is splash fed, and does not provide adequate oiling to the pivot shaft.
