With the go pro video editor the files can be huge, just don't convert them all in one go, instead segment a clip you want then convert it and whilst that is converting you can segment another file. I would also advise on trimming your clips before converting them, as you probably have a lot of pad...

Welcome to the world of video and huge file sizes :) The GoPro shoots in MP4 H.264 as far as I know. The best advice I can give to you is to only convert the part of the videos you want to keep, and throw away the rest. I used MPEG Streamclip to trim my file and re-encode them for editing.
