Oil & Filter changes

Post by V6 Mondy »

I,m fairly new to this (obviously), but can i ask what sort of mileage you do between oil changes ?
I,ve read on some forums about changing it every 600 miles, but when i bought my bike at the end of last year , i was told to bring it back next year for MOT and a service ?

GSXF750

once a year or when ever your bike manufacture says could be 4000-6000 miles
35 years on 2 wheels, 26 years on the road and always has a spanner in my hand

Have a look in your service book, abide by what it says for small services, but by all means change the oil more often, a certain bearded man on here changes his oil about every 4000 miles and I'm going to get into the habit of the same.

depends on the quality of oil you use ....... if you use a decent, motorcycle specific, semi-synthetic or synthetic oil, then the manufacturers recommended intervals should be an OK maximum - never hurts to change sooner though

If you use cheaper oils, then anything up to half that distance.

Always change the filter when you change the oil, they're cheap enough at £2 - 3 quid a pop, decent pattern ones are OK :D

Be very careful using non-motorcycle fully synthetic oils on bikes with wet clutches - the friction modifiers kill them, and your clutch will be slipping into the sunset

I change mine every 6 month as the SVs renowned for throwing big end bearings and i'm on my thrid engine because of this problem

TOP TIP 8) you only end up mixing old oil with new and passing good oil through a dirty filter else

ye, just drain it ( the oil drain plug should be located somewhere on the bottom of the engine), add your new oil filter and put in your new crush washer and replace the oil drain plug.

Usually a good idea to use some engine cleaner too

So are motorcyle/car oils different ? I use 05/30 Semi Synthetic in the Mondeo, and i intend buying 10/40 Semi Synthetic in the bike :?

Bike specific oils are best used in bikes as they have a wet clutch and the same oil is also used in the gearbox, where as cars have dry clutches and seperate gearbox oil.

Although, having said that, there are many bikers out there who only use car oils, as they are cheaper, and suffer no ill effects.
I stick to bike specific oil and have just ordered some from busters as they have a deal on with an oil filter + chain lube thrown in.

http://www.busters-accesories.co.uk I think.

Hein Gericke do the same sorta deal, same oil, filter, and air filter.

I dont change the washer like funky, I am not that posh, and I do too many oil changes!!
