Need some Help!

Hi all,

Haven't been on here in a long time but need some help.
I have now got my ZX9R and its in need of the chain replacing big time.

Ordered the chain and it came all well and good but with a Rivet link. Cos I work in Cirencester not swindon, im finding it hard to get the bike to the shop and get it fitted as I do not have a rivet kit.

Been on ebay and found some rivet kits for about 40ish quid. GW in swindon want £60. why is this tool so costly and why can I not get hold of EK 530 split link anymore! oh well

Anyways, anyone know of a way I can rivet this chain with out this tool? this is my question really.

Any Ideas would be great!

DO NOT FIT A SPLIT LINK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The last thing you want is for the link to fall off and the chain go flying.

You can buy cheaper chain tools but they aint worth the money.

Try and see if you can borrow one from someone in your area.

a properly fitted split link is better than a half arsed attempt at a rivvetted one!!

and anyway how many split links have you actually known to come off??

I run them exclusively for many years and many thousands ands thousands of miles, never had one come undone???

True the last one that I had fail was on my DT 50

I do know first hand about the damage that a flying chain can do as I had one smash through the crankcase on my 996

Had one fail on me once. im sure it was cos it was fudged on and in rush. crapped my self when the chain rapped around the wheel. lucky I was pulling away from the lights and doing only about 40 at the time...

What a night that was, I was towed home by anothe biker! I would not recommend it lol

I've asked about to see if I can get hold of one from a mate but no one seems to have one!

think I will have book a day off work and get it done as the chain is making some great noises lol....

Half-way back up through France, having been riding two-up, loading with camping kit and travelling at a steady 80ish, we stopped for a "personal needs" break, and whilst walking back to the bike I noticed something dangling from the chain - the outer side plate, the clip having already departed ...... thank god we weren't moving when it finally went. That was a 630 DID chain on a GPz11

Similarly a few years later in Switzerland, pulled up at a junction, went to pull away revs rose but nothing happened - looked down and the chain was lying in the road behind the bike

If you don't have the tools/skill to do it yourself, buy the split link, and use it to get the bike to someone who can fit the rivet link properly.

I've had a split link come off on my old Fazer and it was pointing the right way to when fitted.

Agree with Moose if you can't get the proper tool, fit the split link to get it to a garage and get them to do it. Won't take 5 mins to fit.

Oh yeah and tools will vary in price as the more expensive ones also split the chain for you to. But that takes the fun out not useing an angle grinder

I've seen a split link split

as in snap, off a 600 bandit I think. They're just not man enough. How often do you replace a chain, not often. So got to be worth doing right, especiely on a bigger bike.

All Sorted! Managed to get down to Bike treads and get the chain fitted. £15 notes not to bad.

Its funny, I don't need ear plugs now as the noise has gone lol
