Not big, not clever.

Post by philh »

For this evenings commute home from Exeter Airport to the city centre I decided on a route that takes me across Sandygate past the rugby ground then left onto Rydon Lane to drop down to the Countess Wear.

I happened to pass another biker when coming off the motorway.

After exiting Sandygate roundabout I approached a car following a slow truck moving past the rugby ground. I move to the right-hand lane, hang for a second to give the car a chance to see me incase he may also wish to overtake, then make a fast overtake to minimise risk of the car pulling out on top of me having still not seen me.

So, I clear both the car and truck. Check speed. Too fast now for wet roads in the dark. Just about to check left ready to move into left lane and slow when WHAMMO! That biker I passed on the motorway slams past me on my right hand side.

Was that you? If so, just what the hell were you trying to prove huh? Jeez, at least wait for me to move over before you pass me! Everyone on this site knows how much room there is on the outside of an SV1000S sitting in the right-hand lane and I can tell you what, it isn't enough bluddy room for another bike to squeeze safely through at high speed!

I've got no problems with playing silly buggars when the time is right. But that was just plain dangerous. You ride how you like fella, but don't take me down with you please. Christ only knows that we've got enough car drivers trying to run us off the road. Lets not turn on each other eh?!

If it was you, I don't know you. I'm not about to slag you off, but you must be aware of just how stupid your riding was. Take it easy.

And just to prove there's no hard feelings, here's a tip; That left hander onto Rydon Lane that you took at such speed? Be careful. If traffic's heavy then you'll come flying around that one to find stationary traffic queued up onto the bypass and you've got about 100yds to get upright and on the anchors for some mega-heavy unplanned braking. I know this from experience.

Ride safe, and calm down!

I was at countess wear today coming from the hospital at about 16.40. I don't think it was me though, what type of bike was it, I did see an SRAD coming the other way down barrack road or topsham at speed...

Ok i'm a brave man and hold my hands up if i have done wrong. Obviously you must of had a feeling it was someone from the site after that speech.

Firstly thanks for not sl*gging me off but from where i was sat your riding was far more dangerous then mine mate.

You flew past me on the M5 and if you only came from the airport like i did then you must of really got on the gas.

I would like to explain it from my view and then hopefully no hard feelings.

 I am on slip road going towards sandygate off M5, you flew past out in the 1st lane undertaking a car and then chopping the nose off the one in front of me so you could get onto the slip road for the exit

 After leaving the lights with me behind you, you then under took another car going round that sharp slippery left hander, where you had a twich from the rear. This car had to brake for you

 You then chopped the nose off that one to get out into the right hand lane cause the traffic in the left lane was built up moving slowly.

 Then when the way was clear in both lanes you stayed out in the right lane for too long. (hogging it)

But you were no way taking it easy whilst all this was going on. You were shifting so don't go giving it being wet and dangerous.

You upset a few car drivers there mate.

OK I DID OVERTAKE FAR TOO CLOSE TO YOU. BUT THIS WAS ONE SINGLE MISTAKE I MADE

I regret it and truely sorry

Just got it into my head you were up for a burn then tryed holding me out to the right to stop me passing. But i wasn't going to do an under take like you had previously done.

Thanks for the tip about the top bend. I am aware what its like and tryed judging the traffic flow going across the bridge above to see if it was moving ok.It seemed to be but a silly thing to do anyway i guess.

Prob not the best place to express our bad riding styles on a popular site for everyone to see but least it proves we all do have bad habits and it helps if we were told about them.

Ask AGE he gets it all the time

Sorry about the essay and really really sorry for being a jerk mate. It won't happen again i promise.

Hopefully no hard feelings

Take care and ride safe matey

OK, fairs fair. I'll give you all the points you raise Blimey. Traffic busting is my vice and yes, I'll admit that I undertake more often than I (or anyone else!) really should. I like to think that I'm a safe rider though, so I genuinely appreciate your comments. I didn't know that a car was forced to brake for me for instance. Whoops! Perhaps I should get my riding appraised...

I kinda worked out (after you jumped me) that you may have thought I was up for a burn! I wasn't, but even if I was that slippery left hander you mention was too much for me. Chilly tires, soggy road, no ta. Much respect to you for making those turns so swiftly. Especially if, you having also come from the airport, your tires were as cold as mine! And if I had seen you coming sooner, I would have certainly got outta your way!

Seriously fella, even before your explanation, no hard feelings from me. I'm a big boy, I can take being shoved about a bit. Just thought your manoeuvre was a bit aggressive 'tis all... Oh, all right. I admit it. You scared the bejesus outta me!

Sincere thanks for your apology. Maybe I'll make more effort to make a meet. Then I can shove you out've the way at the bar.
