Too good to be true?

Post by hes_a_bird_dog »

Hello Everyone,

I have been looking to change my bike for a while now and have found a bike at a local dealership for sale that seems too cheap to me. It has low mileage (under 1800) and is a year old. It is for sale in a garage that has a similar pricing structure to Bridge (ie at the top end), but is being offered at £1000 cheaper than the same bike at Bridge but the Bridge bike has done 4500 miles.

It has had crash bobbins installed, a race can, seat cowl and sports tyres (please ignore the vaugeness about tyres but I'm new to bikes), so can I assume it's been used as a track bike? If so is this a bad thing considering the mileage? Is the mileage correct and how do I tell?

Can someone please advise, I've been lying awake most of the night wondering if I have a great bargain on my hands if if something might be wrong with it.

Hope someone can offer advice,

The BIRDDOG.

What bike is it? Age, model and full spec and I am sure one of us will tell you if it is a good deal.

It may have been a CAT D write off, but you will find that on the hpi check. CAT C & D write offs can be sold again once fixed and re-mot'd I believe.

Also, if it was used as a trackbike the engine would have had a hard life so the milage may be low but hard. If the other bike was ridden on the road then the milage may be more but easier on the bike with the correct running in period.

In 1000miles, I would probably ride my bike at full throttle or as much as the restrictor lets me for around 150miles. i.e. ±15%.

Also, make a post in the newbie section to let everyone know who you are and if you have passed your test or just to say hi.
Blue Sv650s Curvey - Now unrestricted but starting to find the suspension a problem.
Next bike: CBR600RR eventually.

generally track bikes have the clocks removed since they dont really need to worry about speed cameras, so id guess that that mileage isnt possibly true, but you dont have to take the dials off to race so it could be, either way a track bike isnt something to desirable, if james may sold you it then youve got nothing to worry about, be sweet as a nut :)

I know what that bike is, and no, its never seen a track, Diablo SC pro tyres are standard on those from new.

There is nothing wrong, hidden or incoorrrect.

Try asking the Dealer straight out......"price seems VERY good, why?" And ask what they know of the bike's history, previous owner, sold originally by them?, serviced by them? etc (you'll have to judge for yourself whether you trust the answers or not!).
Ask to see the log book, service log etc What warranty comes with the bike? (if it's short that could be a warning sign, if they offer 12m that could mean they have faith in the bike. Care with warranties, some are barely worth the paper they're written on!)
Does it look original, standard trim....have a close look at fixing screws, bolts etc etc for plastics mountings, engine ancilliaries and so on - it's sometimes obvious when stuff has been taken apart.

Have you ridden it, a test ride can tell a lot.

If in doubt..........play safe and walk away.

I phoned them today, asked a couple more questions and everything seemed to be ok so paid a deposit. They are going to give it a service and tax it for a year so great, I'm well happy, hope the weathers good next week....

Thanks everyone for your comments and I'll make sure I post in the introductions.

PS.

Speak to you soon Mr. Piper.....

guessing its a 675 daytona then, some sportsbike dont do a 1000miles in a year,if its coming from a dealer it will have been checked out first and you'll have some warranty on it too especially if its only a year old
