Garage heating?

Post by AndyW »

I need to be doing a few jobs on the bike soon (hoping to be riding again before long!) but it's a bit cold for working on the bike even in the garage.
I have an old fan heater but it's pretty ineffective out in the garage so I'm looking for some ideas.....what d'you do?

These look pretty good (and cheap)

or there's something like this:

...although I'm not keen on using a gas (propane) or parafin heater in view of the moisture generated and of course open flame could present risks.

Theres loads of choice, are you worried about the electricity cost?

The Halogen Heater will use 1.6kw per hour, thats about 12-15p per hour. Could work out expensive if you're planning on leaving it on? If it's for a quick blast for a few hours a week then it'll be fine, I heard Halogen Heaters are great are producing quick heat but are quite cheap to run for the heat they produce.

I'm no expect but I'd imagine of the Propane heater is designed for garages/workshops it'll be ok with some moisture. I dont know how much it'll cost to run?

Just put on loads of layers and work faster :D

We have a space heater in our workshop which works a treat, but I was wearing 3 t shirts, a thermo polo and a hoddy and was still getting chilly  Have been a bit ill though

Have a look at oil heaters, they use bugger all power and heat a room up nicely.

Do what I have done, put 2 radiators out there running off of the house central heating, easy to do, and rads are mega cheap of flea-bay now.

the halogen ones r good for quick heat up and for using a couple of hours a day will not be expensive to run and of cause if u have electric in the garage just plug&play
propane will be good for heating up a space ie garage for a relatively cheap cost.just not that instant warm up unless u sit on top of it    and as u said u gotta have the gas bottles cluttering up the place and the fire risk.
oil heaters if funky means the oil filled rads r cheap to run but will take a long time to heat up the garage

have fun

ye thats right Bam bam, it's true sometimes they can take a while, but I have one in my downstairs office at work and the place ends up becoming a sauna.

try sealing the garge door to stop any heat getting out. i ave done mine using rubber strips attached to the main door. seems to stop alot of heat going out and all the rain coming in.

when u have stopped the drafts taking away the heat u wont need such a heavy duty heater

theyre pretty good - especially if you point them straight at you - they seem to heat what they point at more than just raising the air temp in general. gas space heaters can tend to chuck out a lot of condensation.

just bought myuself one from screwfix, 27.99 brilliant piece of kit, its a space heater but runs only on electricity, warms the room up in under 5minutes, with a garage being colder than my room it might be about 6minutes :) brilliant piece of kit, going in my garage when i get one
