Bought me a project

Post by V6 Mondy »

Just purchased a 1986 Kawasaki GPZ550

Ok it needs a bit of work, but it runs and sounds pretty good, but
in need of a rear caliper though and a few other bits and bobs before it's
ready to visit the MOT station.

One question though, should it be run on unleaded ??

Yep, it'll run on unleaded quite happliy :D

I had the first ('83) H1 unitrack model 8) Cracking bikes for their time, though mine had a bit of a tragic history ....... looked cool though, sprayed white and floursecent green  (looked better than it sounds  ) had an Alpha 4-1 that apparently wasn't very quiet (there's a surprise for me   )

Post some piccies - I'll see if I can find some of mine & scan 'em in to give you a few ideas 8)

I'd like to get it legal and then not restore, but get it looking how it should be (ie not spending a fortune) if i can
get the parts i need.
Might use it for work on those rainy days.

Are there any other similar models i can use parts from ??

For body panels, the 750/1100 fairings might also fit ...... the side panels might be similar to the same years z550f (can't remember now  ) Mechanically, that engine is as old as the hills - many z550 bits over the years might be similar, certainly case's etc.,

Use a grease gun. Remove the caliper from the bike, put the gun on the bleed nipple and block the line hole. Rap a cloth around the caliper so the piston doesn't fire around the room (I also have the piston facing the bench, and pump away. POP :D You could also try warming the caliper with a heat gun, ally expands quicker than steel and all that.

MMmmmm not bad for a project bike.
Far as I can see you only need handlebars, saddle and peddles and you should have a pretty fine ride :D

Oh, your projects not the blue push bike but the big, black beast
Best of luck with it, the gpz is a cracking bike of its time and one I missed out on in my youth.

And iv still got it, just wont start.
I was thinking of converting it to a pedal one and giving it to my dad but it would cost to much due to nos parts being so expensive.
Trying to find him a 250 superdream :)

Haha so funny !! Ner that's the ongoing kids projects, they take more bikes apart than i ever will .

Sourced another calliper, but i'll try the grease gun method first - thanks
