CBR 929 or 600RR recommendations/opinions.

Post by Ricky_t »

Hi all,

Yet again another question for you experienced motorcyclists.

I have been looking at a cbr 939 and had insurance quotes and they are similar to a 600RR for myself.
Looking at online specs they are about 20hp more than the 600RR, being older will have less devaluation but the main question is, is it a too big a jump from a 650 to a 929?
Is a 600RR slow?
Does the 929 handle as well as the 600?

I have asked for test rides but cannot until August when my restricted license ends.

Thanks

I have had 3 929 blades that have all been track / race bikes. Certainly on the track it's nothing compared to a gixer 1000 K2 that I now use. However thats irrelevant to what bike to choose as unless you are lucky enough to have a few bikes you need to get one for everything.

It has to be the CBR600 RR if your young / inexperienced and don't carry a passanger alot. They are very quick and handle well and will do scratching / semi touring !

The 929 needs a power commander as the fuel injection isn't great low down and this will put power up to between 118 and 138 bhp. All three I had were different and my brother uses the 138 bhp one for trackdays. They are a great bike but as your profile says you are restricted now, I would go 600 first. Remeber that even if you choose a blade it's not too much for you as the throttle turns both ways and it's only GSXR's that have to be ridden by lunatics.

Personally I would go for the RR, you'd get a newer, very much lighter bike, and a better package to progrss to.
The 600RR is not slow by any stretch of the imagination, you couldn;t even compare to what you have now.

I have a 55 Plate (06 model, which was facelifted) in stock, and have ridden it, very impressed, and very nice finish to it.

I`d go for the 600rr mate, they are stunning looking bike, they`ll do 160mph + and prob out handle the blade :D

For a road bike I would have the blade and the 600 for track. I actually prefer riding 600's as you have to work at it to make them shift but that does not in any way mean that the 600 is slow. It just gives a more rewarding riding experience.

I've owned blades too and they are fantastic bikes. If you take a pillion then I'd go for the thou.

You asked for advice so to clarify the babble I've just written. Take both bikes out and buy the one that best suits you and your riding style. Remember the bike is only as fast or slow as the monkey twisting the throttle. Do a couple of advanced lessons or better still a few track days to speed up the learning process.

My question would be: Do you really think you need a faster bike? Have you fully explored the full potential of the SV650?

I have only ever had 600's and the RR i have is prob the easiest to ride and quickly to.

The bike is just so nibble and does everything i want it to on and off the track.

Now as i am getting older i want to go for a thou as i am tired of changing gears so often on my daily route to work

6ooRR is the way forward mate and deffo a safer option to. It will give you so much more fun and will keep up with any thou if ridden well. Except on long straights of course :? plus you have the piece of mind that it won't spit you off mind corner when you get back on the throttle too much unlike a thou where you need to be a bit more forgiving.

600rr everytime !!!

its such a planted quick bike, you'll find the blade slow and heavy compared to the 600rr.

its a quick bike that will keep up with zx10's and gsxr's in the right hands

Thank you for all for your advice.

I have not fully explored the potential of the SV as I my first trackday with a bike will be llandow this June. I have also joined DAM with the IAM and plan to start observation rides in June.

I don't like the power delivery of the SV even before it was restricted. It is just a lazy bike that is good for learning but you don't need to work the gears which is most of the fun (for me.)
I used to own a civic vtec that was most fun when you revved it high however, with the v-twin I can ride and make progress without having to rev high. It is good with servicing and keeps maintenance costs down but as I only ride for fun the SV is a bit of a compromise. I have only reached the limit of traction on the SV once and would want to get a bike that was more suited for my riding.

I have had a look on the internet regarding specs of the 600RR and from late 2005, USD forks and radial brakes were added. Is it worth the extra expense to get a newer model over one a few years older that will depreciate less?

I intend to keep this bike for a long time. The SV was just a learner bike (for me) as many people recommend that going straight to a 600 supersport is not a good idea.

have you really ridden the sv to be looking to move up ? From your previous posts all i can gather is that it has sat in a garage for months on end without use. This isn't really much good for you or the bike. I know its restricted so not as much fun but you do need to get some miles down with and without others to learn how your bike can run. If yot are gonna get an RR and stick it in the garage for months at a time is it really worth it ? Learn to ride the sv unrestricted first then go looking in the sweet shop. I reckon after a good summer you will have a better idea.

If your moving up I'd go for the 600 rr as it's not too much of a leap and it'll be more user friendly for you.

Got to kinda echo what simon says to be honest though mate, get yourself on more group ride outs with the sv in order to further your own abilities before changing up to a focused tool like the 600rr of blade. Believe me, I know how stale a person can get when they ride alone alot, it happens to me all the time.

ricky after owning 3 big vtwins myself (never a sv though)i feel i can honestly say your riding it wrong, twins need to be revved to make them go quick. my 748 was awesome but needed to be revved hard to get anywhere quick, the 916 was at its best on track when high up the rev range. if a twin wasnt meant to be revved why would it have a 11k red line.the sv is probably a little bit tamer in stock form but theres been some seriously quick sv650/700 minitwins race bikes, one passed my 6rr like i was standing still on a trackday a few years ago. carry on with the training and do llandow and then you'll see how hard you can ride a bike

the upgrade to a 05 bike is probably worth it for resale value but tbh i cant say i noticed anything bad about conventional forks and calipers on my old 03 and im sure blimey would agree. the only real reason to change is for fashion reasons, the 03/04 model is a superb bike

Ditto both above replies but if you do move to the RR then 05 model was deffo the better option as it had the extra trick bits you mentioned but most inportantly they sorted the poor midrange prob from the 03 and 04 models suffered.

Beleive me mine really feels bogged down sometimes and you have to just keep grabbing a lower gear to get moving, not helped by the race can but a Power Commander would sort this if you can afford £300

But saying all that you prob won't notice a difference between any of them. A quality bike all round mate no matter what year you buy

cant say my RR had a problem with the midrange, pulled cleanly all the way through the range
the akrapovic and power commander may have helped with this though
