600cc sportsbikes tend to need a lot of revving, and lack torque low down which is where the larger capacity bikes will win out every time.
Powerwise the current crop of 08/09 sports 600s are punting out around 110bhp at the rear wheel, regardless of what the magazines say about them and manufacturers claim, typically torque is slightly below 50lb/ft, the Triumph 675 is the highest torque figure of the lot averaging out at 51lb/ft. Compare that with a GSXR750K5 which has around 130 to 135bhp at the wheel and around 60 to 65lb/ft of torque. Modern litre sportsbikes are now producing upwards of 165bhp at the wheel, compared to around the 130 to 140bhp mark for 00/01 machines.
Most road riders will not be able to effectively use all the abilities of a modern 600cc sportsbike let alone anything larger in everyday terms, the state of our roads makes it almost suicidal let alone the traffic situation.
600cc naked/retro bikes are typically tuned for midrange ability at the expense of outright power, think around the high eighties in terms of bhp and similar amounts of torque to the sportsbikes, but placed lower down in the rev range, these too will require the gearbox to be worked rather than the effortless overtaking on the litre nakeds, which again are retuned for lower rpm response, typically a supernaked will be producing around the 110 to 120bhp at the wheel.
I've got the results from hundreds of bikes stored in my dyno showing how power output has changed over the years.
In real terms the sports 600s have only gained around 12bhp or so at the wheel since the late 90s.
The litre bikes have gained around 40bhp or so over the same timescale, a more useable difference has been in the larger capacity naked bike sector up from around 90 to 95bhp of the old ZRX11 CB1000 XJR etc in stock trim to around the 115 to 120bhp output of the latest litre nakeds.
Whether or not you ride a 600 or a litre bike power output is more than adequate for everyday use, the smaller capacity bikes just require more gearbox action to keep them on the boil,.

have tried to catch a few tho - and lost
there are no girlie bikes - just girlie riders
Ok so 600's aren't girly bikes that's fair enough, what's a 'girlie rider' then??
surely it's a rider of the non male gender with wobbly /firm fun bits upstairs and naughty hidey bits downstairs.
and no i don't mean speedy when he 'tucks'
