Well is not sure how much truth this holds but I’ve been told toady about the new Motorcycle testing procedures coming into operation next January (2013). Apparently a lot of instructors are unaware of this also, but it will affect them just as much as it will become very clear shortly.
As from next Jan, anybody wanting to ride a bike will have to pass a test on a 125cc bike first; they can then only ride a bike up to a 125cc for I think it was 2 years. Then after the 2 years another test has to be taken on a 500cc bike and, if passed, only a bike up to 500cc can be ridden. After 2 years another test has to be taken on a bigger bike 600cc and if passed any size can be ridden, so basically 4 years of restricted riding will be in place.
I do agree in part, I think its crazy a rider can pass at 17 years old and jump on a 1400cc bike without any experience!!! But this may be taking it a bit far!!!
And for the poor instructors, that means providing 3 different size motorcycles to be able to provide the requirements needed. Not very fair for any small companies out there or up and coming business starting up!
I may be slightly out in times or the finer points of the rules, as I was dumbfounded when I was being told, but am led to believe that even though it’s not public knowledge as yet it’s definitely going to happen!!!

Re: New motorcycle test rules!!!!
Yep it looks like the new changes are coming in next year
http://lightningpass.com/changes-motorcycle-learner-law - scroll down to near the bottom
16+ CBT
17+ A1 licence allowing a full licence up to a 125cc
19+ A2 licence allowing a full licence up to a 400cc
24+ A (direct access) licence allowing a full licence for any motorcycle
So basically anyone younger than 24 might be a bit stuffed ....

Re: New motorcycle test rules!!!!
well that makes it look a bit better for the older riders??!! I thought it meant despite age you have to take tests in the order ststed, so if your neew to riding or decide its time to take test you start on bottom of the ladder and work up.
So a bit of good news

Yeah 17-21 you can only do a test on a 125 but it then matures to full license after 2 years, under the new rules this won't happen as you'll have to take a test to upgradefalcon wrote:Dont you have to do a restricted access course as it is now if you are 17?

Re: New motorcycle test rules!!!!
As it stands at the moment if you pass your test at 17 years old you can ride any bike you want, but it must be restricted to 33bhp. This lasts until 2 years after you pass your test.Bullet wrote: I do agree in part, I think its crazy a rider can pass at 17 years old and jump on a 1400cc bike without any experience!!! If I remember correctly this is something to do with the 3rd European licence directive, which means it WILL happen. And as with pretty much every European biking law it has been decided by people who clearly have absolutely no interest in bikes.
I think the worst part of these changes is that the DAS will no longer be available at 21, but 24 instead.
Why is it that these people think we are unable to make our own decisions and need to be wrapped in cotton wool at the age of 21?
Re: New motorcycle test rules!!!!
I agree with the nature maturing to bigger engines, I dont agree with having to constantly re-test. I suppose it is another revenue stream for the government...
