Suspension Guru's..

Post by dan90210 »

My bike will run wide mid corner at the front end. Why would this happen?

Forks only have preload adjustment. For compression I can change the oil.

Rear shock has preload and comp adjustment.

To achieve the correct sag the front is almost wound right out to minimum and the rear is wound to maximum.

Thanks. I'll try them if I can't sort it myself.

I've done a bit of reading now. I reckon I have a few things to try out.

You may have noticed the big different in sag setting from front to rear, min on one and max on the other. This is probably because the rear has been raised and has opened the spring from where Yamaha intended. Maybe I need more preload at the back to help stop the bike squatting at the back mid corner, but it's already max'ed...

The reason for the rear raise is the FZR1000 was very lazy as standard, very stable, but lazy, so I have done this tail raise after advice from some FZR racers. The difference being they also use hugely expensive Ohlins shocks that are infinitely adjustable compared to mine...

:D how about dropping front end a few mm in the triple clamps, will make it more twitchy at high speed but quicker to turn in

Thanks chaps.

Can't drop these forks as they have a lip that sits against the lower clamp, instead the rear is raised by 40mm. Still really stable at high speed and turns in well.

Its mid corner and at the exit where I need to tweak.

I stiffened the read damping before the ride out tonight and it feels loads better. I reckon I could do with a stiffer spring to do it properly. Adjustment is really limited.

Something else that might be worth a look ....... I had a YZF750 shock on my exup - remote reservoir, and adjustable compression & rebound

I've just had a re-think ....... I had an Exup rear end on my Katana too, and I think that might have been the one that had the fully adjustable YZF shock on it ........ and that was obviously made to fit - but I'm certain the Exup had a fully adjustable remote res shock too :?

Send Layne a PM and get him to measure his YZF shock ........

Har Har Goatie - but Laynes just that kind of guy

Dan - how adjustable is the Thunderace shock? then again, an OW01 shock would help with the ride height too ......

I have now altered the tyre pressures slightly so I'll see how that feels later if it doesn't pee down.

To be honest this rear shock is pretty much max'd out where adjustment is concerned. Raising the damping has helped loads in the corners but now it is bordering on rough over bumps. Any more damping and the bike is gonna start hopping on the bumps. I definitely need a stiffer spring and less damping.

The only answer is to start saving for some bling, an Ohlins or similar shock that bolts right on and is the correct length. OR. Put up with it as it is and put the money towards an R1. :)):

Before you go all bling and chuck ohlins on, check out British shock companies Hagon and Nitron, both offer competitive quality shocks and re builds, give them a ring and have a chat, they can probably rebuild and refresh your shock and set it up for your weight and riding ability. Oh and remember be honest about your riding, that way they will set it up correctly for your ability.
