My first race at Castle Combe

Post by layne »

Entered my first races on Saturday at Combe. All went well.

Only real problem was discovering that the clutch wouldn’t let me do race starts. Had to pull away slowly on normal revs until the clutch was fully released then I could gas it. Also made a mistake on the last lap into Quarry by slowing to early and got punished for it.

Reasonably pleased with the outcome. Took 5 seconds of my lap time there 2-3 years ago on the YZF.
Here’s the video of the feature race – The King of Combe. Qualified 36th out of 49 and finished 25th from 42 starters.

Two other people in it to watch for are Payner – VERY white leathers and orange tail on his RSVR and his main rival in SOT on the RC8R – very high tail piece.

To be fair to Andy, he did have some “electrical issues” with the fuel pump and when sorted after the race, in his SOT race he did beat my lap time and Dave Mackay on the RC8R. But history will show that I BEAT HIM :D and yes I did have a nice smile all the way home. :)

That was in the Open class.
An overweight, 20 year old, bog standard, wheezing YZF750 is no match for a fully loaded BSB 200bhp ZX10.

And I expect the rider may have had something to do with too.
Also in my defence, I was a late entry and started from the back, so the first lap was quite slow while everyone concertinaed out. Which wasn’t helped by Andy running on and off track tangling with another guy....

I did a lot better in the Pre-injection/Pre-2000 race.
