You are quite correct about target fixation. I thought that looking where you wanted to go only applied to bikers, but it happens a lot when I wear hi-viz, car drivers look at me and tend to veer towards me. Also, to be brutally honest, it is almost always an elderly driver.
I must add that it doesn't happen when I drive !
Does that then stand as a case 'FOR' Dpm? When you are in a car you are not wearing or indeed driving a high viz jacket, or driving a High Viz car, you are surrounded by other cars looking all very similar, so are you not 'blending into the surroundings'?
OK that's playing with words, but in my experience you can wear what you want, if the car driver isn't looking, they won't see you PERIOD! Most are too busy glued to Sat Navs, iPods, mobiles and any other gadget designed to clutter dashboards. SMIDSY is nothing new, anyone remember the chap with the cricket bat back in the 70's saying 'Think Once, Think Twice, think BIKE!', nothing much has changed since then, even though more bikers than ever wear some form of High Viz.
