I see everyone uses Google maps to plan routes.
I've tried to plan ride out routes and found it an absolutely hateful system.
If I try to plot the route by adding destinations I'll run out of permitted destinations before I've got a fraction of the way round. If I delete a destination it'll change the route I've already laid down and and if I try to trace the route by dragging it'll add unwanted short cuts at every junction.
And B roads are impossible to see without zooming right in and unmarked roads are virtually invisible.
Do you have to be signed in to Google maps to make it work properly? I haven't signed in because if I do it'll over-ride my server home page. Its a crap, slow and annoying system.
Am I doing it wrong or is there something better out there?

You are of course welcome along to any Southwestbikers rideout, however your bike must be in good mechanical order (we don’t want anything falling off of it including you), taxed and have a current MOT. You must have a valid motorcycle licence and current motor insurance. You are in charge of your motorcycle at all times and SWB will not accept any responsibility for actions you take or any accidents you may have. Always ride within your own capabilities and do not put others at risk. Remember, while you are on a Southwestbikers rideout you are representing the site and what it stands for.
Thank-you.
Don't forget......ANYONE can organise and run a rideout.

Re: Google maps
When you write a route on maps it's often easier not to put a pin in every turn or town, you don't need to. If you are leading it chances are most that turn up won't know where they are most of the day anyway, they'll just follow.
When you run out of pins if you click on the route line you can drag the route further down the track. Then release the button and it'll stick. This allows you to make the gap between pins a lot longer.

Re: Google maps
I think the latest incarnation of Google maps is a lot worse than previous. I use it just as a broad guide for routes, the details are in my head - that's why we often end up on a mystery tour
Google maps "upgrade" is just like Windows latest versions, Win7 was really good and later versions are absolute crap, why change summat that works fine

Re: Google maps
Not sure if you have an iPad but I use the Route4Me route planner app. Planned a whole trip round Europe with ease, just never made it on the bike!
Re: Google maps
Tried again and still no good. I'm giving up. I now detest all things Google with a passion.
Until I can find a map system that actually works I won't bother with online maps.
Back to paper for me.

Re: Google maps
No kids. What I can't do myself doesn't get done.
Even if I get Google route planning to work, the maps are poor. They're not detailed enough and only show the major roads clearly.
I'll keep searching. They'll be a better system somewhere but I'm not persevering with Google, life's too short.
