Mixing tyre types a bad idea?
Turns out my calliper bolts on the front are fused to the forks. But Phil managed (with a lot of cursing I imagine) to get the back reshod with a Michelin Road 5. The Pirelli on the front still has some tread left, don’t know exactly what kind it is but it’s a sport tyre from 2017.
Do you think it’s smarter choice to wait to ride until I get the front sorted out with a sport touring tyre?
The bike is 2011 KTM 990 Supermoto T, I’m not the most experienced rider.

Re: Mixing tyre types a bad idea?
Nah, I run odd tyres from time to time.
I currently have a Bridgestone BT023 rear and a Continental Road Attack 3 front on my 1190 Adv and the thing still handles like it's glued to the road.
The BT023 rear does struggle with the power though so I might need something a bit more grippy next time, but I'm keen to try one on my 990 when it's due.

It's ok to mix tyres, BUT your front is 8 years old and personally my OCD wouldn't allow it, may as well get a Michelin on the front and put your mind at rest
Re: Mixing tyre types a bad idea?
Thank you for your thoughts. Unless it’s (very) dangerous I will likely want to go ride around a bit before I get around to sorting out the seized calliper bolts.

Re: Mixing tyre types a bad idea?
Nah ..... I'd Def get the caliper bolts sorted and give the calipers a good clean and once over, maybe even new seals, fluid etc... few quid or arse over tit in a hedge ...your choice
Re: Mixing tyre types a bad idea?
I definitely don’t want to end up in a hedge. I suppose it makes sense to get everything sorted out first. But dang it. Definitely need another bike for times like this. Anyone has a cheap enduro for sale????

Re: Mixing tyre types a bad idea?
For full disclosure it would appear the last time the caliper bolts were removed was when the tyres were last changed 6 - 7 years ago. They have also been over torqued with scant maintenance being undertaken. They resisted the persuasive powers of a breaker bar and heat snapping 2 x t45 bits. I suspect the bike was supplied to Church in this condition which is really poor for a Honda main dealer. Certainly supplying a bike with tyres of that age to a new rider is not really acceptable. The brake pads appear to be of a similar vintage and I would also replace those as a matter of urgency. The front tyre has 3mm of tread but the. compound has gone off so the tyre would afford almost no feel or grip and I would consider it dangerous to ride.

Oh, ok.
It's possible that those bolts were just put in dry and have now seized.
So what's the next plan, is there any warranty left?
I suppose it's difficult to get much heat into the threads due to the bolt length (and them going through the caliper bodies).
I think if no warranty then I'd be drilling the heads off so the calipers can be removed and then you can get some heat into the threads.

I believe that may well be Simon's play. I'm dropping it to him to play with as I've got my own shit bikes to sort.

Not sure what the clearance is going to be between the edge of the disk and wheel rim. Removing the pads may allow some movement but not much.
Gonna be an adventure.

Re: Mixing tyre types a bad idea?
Yeh..., I think pads out and mud guard off should give enough 'wiggle room' to get the wheel out.billinom8s wrote: ↑Feb 16th, '25, 16:55 Not sure what the clearance is going to be between the edge of the disk and wheel rim. Removing the pads may allow some movement but not much.

Also you could just take the disks off, or take the forks out of the yokes (and front brake master off the bars) and then the whole lot can be moved to work bench.
So many options.. good luck.

Too kind.
Let's hope the yoke, spindle, spindle clamp and mudguards bolts aren't in a similar condition.

Re: Mixing tyre types a bad idea?
A big thank you to everyone for your input!
Bike was bought privately, from a guy who worked at a Honda dealership. Which sounds dodgier reading it here than it did to me at the time.
Sounds like the bike was sitting around for a few more years than I realised. I may be in the market for a parts bike rather than an enduro. But I think there is a decent chance we can get it road worthy again, especially with your help.
