It's mainly just marketing BS anyway. Once a tyre is good enough for your bike & riding style..., then it's good enough, period.
Paying twice as much for an even better one with a slightly different tread pattern is a fool's errand and just makes you even more gutted when you get a non-repairable puncture 500 miles later.

this. I've currently got Metzler M5's on the MV. They were a great tyre when they came out, and are still a great tyre today. You can get them for two thirds the cost of the later M7's or M9's, but it doesn't mean the later versions are 50% better......

Totally agree Andy, pretty much any new tyre will be better than the worn hoop it replaces.
But I simply must have the latest all singing super-duper tyre if it shaves a few tenths off my North Devon TT lap time
