Out of interest, when riding with headphones, how loud do you have the volume turned up (compared to if you were in the living room at home, say)? Or do you have noise cancelling headphones?
Also, doesn't the music drown the sounds of other vehicles (and emergency services) around you?

Hi,
I used to use a tank bag with clear top and do as suggested, write out the major roads/junctions in thick black pen then have a small map tucked away inside for reference if I got lost which I did a lot Lol
It's easy enough to follow a route at a quick glance and you can normally tell when you have taken a wrong turn, especially if you have had a good look at the route in advanced.
I do use satnav in the car though just through lazyness and just use my phone for that, as said there are plenty of handlebar mounts available for phones, I wouldn't want the sat nav in my ear though as I want to hear what's going on around me.
I'm in Bristol where abouts are you?
Darren
