Good Question????

Room for discussion...

Everyone who is in the Know about TL's know unlike the TLR which is only Timing Retard restricted (Has poor fuel maps for gears 1,2,3,4)...

The TLS is a totally different kettle of fish...

As the person on that site found out, trying to apply Timing Retard Elimination methods to the TLS does not produce the un-restricting effects he was hoping for as it did with the TLR, it just made it more rideable!

So it's more to do with whats going on inside the ECU...

Could an external device like an PowerCommander be the answer, well to be honest NO, it's doing the same externally as what the Timing Retard was doing, which is just in effect "Tweeking" the fuel maps, rather than being the ultimate solution...

I've moved away from the idea of a PowerCommander, purely bcos...

1. It's anonther Point of Failure in the system
2. I don't make enough changes to justify it being there

So hence why when I do need a change, I goto the professionals to get Yoshi kit on the ECU to do full remap for all the gears...

I feel that for the TLS, something like that would be the only option, as just trying to tweek it here and there will not bring back the missing ponies like a professional can, and at only ?G50-70 a time, cheeper than pot luck with a PowerCommander anyway!

Anyway your thoughts, over to you chief 8)

my thoughts are that the first tl1000s's were completely unrestricted, 98 onwards probably suffered from the wheelie wire only, which retards the ignition through 1st to 5th gear on the S, and 99-on bikes were probably restricted in the ECU as well. Disabling the wheelie wire is different to gsxr's etc - where the pink wire only needs cutting and nothing else. On a TlS from what i gather it is simply a case of cutting the pink wire in the loom of 3 from the gearbox, and splice the loom end through a 15k resistor into the black and white wire in the same bundle of wires - this tricks the bike into thinking its in 6th gear through all gears. do this and i'd imagine any pre-99 bike will give the same output. dont quote me though..

It's a confusing issue, the method with cutting the pink wire and/or resistor modifications etc etc are all to the same aid: Timing Retard Elimination.

This is also the same on GSXR's and my TLR... As I've shown in a different post on this forum, to get round this, easyiest way is just to unplug the gear sensor from the loom, as a fail-safe the ECU then always runs the bike on the 6th Gear MAP all the time...(Full power all the time, oh yes like a normal bike)

The MAP's for gears 1,2,3,4 are "weaker" than 5 and 6, where 5 and 6 realises the full power of the bike's engine...

But it would be safe to assume that on the TLS from 98 onwards, even the MAP's for 5 and 6 are still weak and watered down, so doing any work in the Timing Retard Elimination area of things on a TLS is still pretty pointless unlike on a GSXR or TLR...

PowerCommander in the right hands on 98 TLS's onwards could fill the gap, but really it's a professional which needs to get in there and put it all right again with their Yoshi kit and other methods!

Only reason I'm going Professional on my TLR is I've fitted both race pipes and Seriously modified the Airbox, so need them to take the mix, stick it in the oven and bake me da cake 8) But from weighing all this up, in my eyes for a TLS 98+ owner, take it to a pro, get it sorted!

TLS to me is anonther GSXR1100, fantastic bike BUT again let down by handling flaws, allthough the TLS is far more rideable, but still lacking that ability of the TLR, hence I went for the R and not the S, even though the S was over a grand cheeper...

(Im a bit pissed off Mr Suzuki gave up on the TLS and instead of making it right, made the pussy SV1000, which unlike it's smaller exceptional small bro the SV650, is in comparision a piece of s.hit lol)

Allthough look at this modded TLS on ebay mmmmmmmmmmmmm
