the best part of the tyre is when its new, inexperienced people lose it not the tyres themselves. my first mile on my new rear 2ct was 2 laps round cadwell to learn the circuit, tyres were fine
colin i think you should rethink your logic on the michelin scenario, 1 tyre in 75000 goes pop over a 2 year period and you say michelin havent done enough for your buisness. i'd put money on it that the pirelli/metzeller group and dunlop wouldnt do a recall like this because of 1 tyre.i think michelin should be praised for doing such a large recall. im not bothered when my new tyre gets here as long as it gets here sometime as theres loads left in the tyre thats fitted

The idea of taking it steady for the first 100 miles is to do with the coating they put in the moulds so they can get the tyre out. I've seen what can happen to a bike if you don't.
Are you gonna risk binning your bike for the sake of a minsley 100 miles
Deej you were on a track, and may have just been lucky, or was riding like a girl

The mold release on a tyre goes quite quickly - you only have to look at the tyre after about 2 or 3 miles to see that. 'tis slightly different in the wet, true, and you should be a bit carefull then 'til the tyre surface is "roughened" a little
The REAL reason why you should take it easy on newly fitted tyres is the "soap" used to ease them onto the rims. This allows a new tyre to slip on the rim slightlywhen placed under stress. Modern soaps are much better than those of 20-30yrs ago though ...
Do you think all BSB/Superstock/Isle of Man riders who use treaded tyres do 100+ miles before giving them the berries
I think not ......

Of all the things I have ever lost, I miss my mind the most .....
Handle stressful situations like a dog - If you can't eat it or play with it, pee on it and walk away

you cant lean all the way over on new tyres on the road mike, its down to people not respecting the bike theyre on, bet they were both zx10s on roundabouts with the guys in the wrong gear or too much bike for their experience
new tyres are ace to ride on much better than used
glad you agree webber, its bollacks that people are worrying about it,im just happy to be getting a free front tyre lol

I think its bollocks anyway, because if you have chicken strips and you lean over you instantly lose the un-used surface of the tyre, if that makes sense, so yeah new tyres are cool

That's what I mean by take it steady.deej wrote:you cant lean all the way over on new tyres on the road mike,
Anyway heard a new theory today which makes a lot of sense. I was told that it's because the manufactures put a presurvitive on them which is oily to stop them cracking when in storage.
I've read in a tyre book, think it was a Dunlop one, that you need to do 100 steady miles.

As far as I'm concerned they've done all they can to sort the problem. If I had to pay for part of it then I wouldn't have been impressed byt they've foot the bill for the lot. Thanks Michelin

theyve paid up so far but im sure we'll pay next year when the price goes up
im sure dunlop/michelin/pireli say a 100miles to cover themselves against legal action to stop some idiot claiming for crash damage by saying you never told me i couldnt do 90mph round that corner on new tyres !!!
could be some truth in the preservative mike but moose i dont think tyre soap as anything to do with it as that shouldnt be on the part of tyre that touches the tarmac,if there is it means you've got a crap tyre fitter, correct mike ??

I've always given them time to warm up on a dry road over 20miles or so, increasing the lean slowly rather than chucking it in. After that it's game on, doesnt matter if it's done 20miles or 2000miles it's got to go over to the edge for the first time at some stage....
I guess it's just one of those things...like not going over x revs for 800 or so miles on a new bike.
