A mate of mine just found out as he is about to sell his bike it is a cat d .he has had the bike a few years and generally had no idea.does it really affect the resale value ? If so by much ?

It does, and can also make it more expensive to insure too.
I'd guess 20% to 30% reduce resale value.
If your mate can prove the previous owner knew and deceived him (like if the advert your mate bought from claimed no accidents) he could go after them in court for damages... otherwise he's stuffed.

As jug as said,
But found it makes a difference on what type of bike it is.
Cat d is the older category so was written off over 3 years ago when changed to cats a,b,s and n.
Usually affects around 25% but as said a tidy low mileage salvage vehicle could be worth the same as a tatty unloved example.
Most people disclose information about write off status,
But only have mention it if asked. Buyer should do their own checks.

Wouldn't it be picked up when insuring though?

Insurance companies will know past and previous etc.
Most write offs are written on the v5
"Has been damaged substantially where it was uneconomical to repair"
Only to some people. Some dont care but will only pay out "a write off price" if recrashed etc.
But never found it a problem on any of my vehicles past or present, (street twin was a cat n)
And the new car is still awaiting to be delivered from the salvage yard.
