BIKER DOWN 3 (Me!!!)

Today around 3pm, was going from town to old town...

Two cars, going slow up the hill, so looked ahead to check the side streets either side, no cars, anything oncomming, nope no cars...

Noticed van up the top of the hill, calculated overtaking would be completed before then...

Proceeded to overtake at a legal speed, got just past the first car, when the slow one in front started to indicate right, made the assumption he was being a good chap indicating early due to the stupidly parked van on the top of the hill...

However he cut straight in front of me to go up one of the side roads on the right, I braked, but sadly in an effort to avoid hitting him, I did a full front stoppie, but shot over the top of the bike landing on my legs, knees and wrist :(

I missed his car, but me and the bike both suffered... not good :(

Anyway police was on the scene, will call them tomorrow to get details, I should be able to make a claim against him, as he didnt look over his shoulder before turning as if he did the accident would have been avoided!

(Too many car drivers just indicate and turn, as we all know, thats wrong, just like bikers... car drivers should always check too!)
I can barely walk at the mo, lots of swelling, and right wrist is in a protective sling thingie, I need to get it looked at this Thursday!

Oh well, I know its easy to do, but never take for granted that other road users will do the right thing when on the road, this is the 2nd time this has happened to me now, first time it was filtering, which by law is always a grey area, but hopefully with the police and/or witnesses help this one should be clear cut (Hoping their was a witness otherwise it could drag out)

On a brighter note, TL plastics should be done this week :D as I'm getting someone else to do them :) yey! Though I expect I wont be riding for at least a few weeks if not longer, these wrist fractures are tricky :( sobs!

Cheers chaps :)

I know A_T I tried explaining it to my dad (he's 61) and even he doesn't know you have to look to check before you turn...

I've been learning to take my car test, and if you don't look now, you fail your test there and then, no question about it :(

I ain't seen the bike yet, got a friend to pick it up, from what I could tell, as I flipped the bike in the air, its only plastic damage on the right hand side, and prolly the usual like leaver, footpeg etc etc...

Problem with 400's is the frame bends easy on them under imact, but as my quick actions avioded a collision, frame should be ok fingers crossed...

Anyway I'm gonna rest up for the next few days, and I got my old man on hand to attend to my every need (bless) lol

Cheers peeps, stay sharp out there, un-educated meanies on the roads!!!

Sorry to hear of your plight. I hope you heal soon and that the bike is ok. Get back on a bike as soon as you can. Having driven through central London recently it was a poinient reminder that with car drivers in general the use of indicators has no relationship to when they actually turn or which direction they turn in.

Bad luck there mate, hope you get everything fixed soon.

So what lesson can we learn from this accident ?

NEVER overtake when there's a junction on your right, assume that the car IS going to take that turn. Or a car could come out of that junction and be heading towards you. He may not have looked in your direction before pulling out.

They wont look out for you, you have to look out for yourself.

Take care y'all.

least you;re ok, hope bikes not too badly damaged. As clunk said though, expect every car driver to be a moron and they wont catch you by surprise

Well I've not long woken up, just had a nice long sleep, and I'm stiff as a brick, feel like a bus has hit me now the swelling is going down and the bruises are comming out...

I didn't have any chance really soon as he indicated he started to turn, I felt like it was my fault when it happened but now the shock and the pain has worn off and I can think straight, I know it was him who was in the wrong...

As I said I planned ahead, no other cars around at the time, was a 30 which is a safe speed for the area, and I was in the middle of the oncomming lane when overtaking, full beams on, clearly visiable...

It wont put me off biking, this is my 5th crash within 4 yrs of riding LOL but out of those 5, this is the 3rd time I've come off bcos of a car not driving correctly!

Clunk m8 As Bikers we need to overtake to progress otherwise would be no point in riding a bike, and I follow the book, your also meant to indicate as your overtaking, but I don't do that in urban areas as other road users Misinterpret it.

I guess you could say, treat all other road users as unpredictable muppets that are going to kill you any chance they get, and it general, that would be a safe rule to follow, I try to keep myself in good space away from cars...

However to get away from cars so your in an open space and safe, you have to overtake and ride defensively, most of the other road users know how to drive, it's just bcos I ride on a daily basis, that sods law (ie the probability of chance) is against me in that im more likely to come across a plonker who does something stupid, and when I do I'm usually in an ideal position to react, sadly this time even though I overtook wide, left plenty of room, and made myself visiable, didn't stop him just indicating then turning straight away in front of me...

I didn't even have any direction in which I could go to avoid him, if I went left, I would have been hit by the car that was behind him, if I'd went right into the junction, I wouldn't have made it as at the time he was right in front of me when he cut across, so on went the brakes, but to stop in time before hitting him I had to brake so hard I did a front stoppie, but overshot and came off, now considering I'm like 22st or so, and it's only a 400, it just shows you how much force there is going on in a bike at only 30mph, if you stop it dead like I did to avoid a collision, all that energy is passed to you, and wheyhey your flying, i think this time round, I came off the worse but I'll make some calls today, I've got accident cover with my insurance which I believe should be legal cover also, but I'll find out what the police have first :)

I haven't had a chance to see the bike yet, but until my right wrist improves, I won't be able to do anything to it, I can't even pick up a mug of coffee with that hand yet hurts too much :(

Anyway take it easy peeps, weather taking a turn for the worst, and thanks for all the replies, should be on the mend soon :)
