TRACK DAY GUIDE

Here is a quick guide to your first track day:

TRANSPORT

To get the most out of the day it is best to hire / use a van to transport your bike to and from the circuit as this allows you to fully prepare you bike before the actual day and gives plenty of storage room for all the rest of your gear. Note a short wheel base (SWB) transit will comfortably accommodate two sports bikes. You will need something to use as a ramp to get the bikes on/off the van though)

The second option is to use a trailer although this will limit the space you have for your gear depending on the size of your car.

GEAR

To attend a track day you will need a full set of leathers (one piece or two piece with a full length zip) and an ACU approved helmet (must UK bought helmets have the ACU sticker on the back). You will also need appropriate gloves and boots. (Other gear maybe allowed depending on the circuits own rules)

BIKE PREPARATION

General Checks:

If your bike is due a service you should have it done before (not after) the track day.

Check break/clutch fluid, coolant and oil levels.

Check break pads have sufficient life left in them.

Check chain tension and ensure it is lubricated.

Check nothing is loose.

Full tank of petrol.

Track day preparation:

Remove the number plate.

Tape up all lights (headlamp and stop lamp), remove or tape up indicators.

Disconnect your break light.

WHAT TO TAKE WITH YOU

Take all your riding gear.

Driving licence.

Bottled water (take lots as you will get very dehydrated one or two

energy drinks are ok but they are no good for dehydration)

Snack food (bananas, mars bar etc)

Tools (take at least enough tools to adjust levers and chain, adjust suspension and check tyre pressures)

Engine oil (just a small bottle especially for triumph riders)

Jerry Can (full of petrol, probably won’t be needed but best to have just in case)

Camera (to take pics of your mates)

Clean top (to change into for the journey home as you will get sweaty)

THE NIGHT BEFORE

Get everything ready the night before so you are not rushing in the morning. Try to avoid any spicy foods (pasta would be best – u will be shitting yourself the next day anyway)
Avoid having to much alcohol. (Unless your name is Nick)
Get an early night.

ON THE DAY

Try and get there early to sign in and have a look around.
During the briefing listen carefully and don’t be afraid to ask any questions.

Don’t be intimidated by people turning up with all the gear (i.e. slicks, tyre warmers, for race/track day bike, race leathers) – it really doesn’t mean a dam thing!!

First time out:

Try to get up the front behind the group leader (the guy in the bib) to see the best lines around the track.

Take it easy for the first few laps – remember your tyres are still cold.
Build up your speed gradually and never try to race anyone else.
Concentrate on where you are going don’t worry about people coming up behind you, it is always the faster riders responsibility to overtake safely –remember this when you’re overtaking to.

As the day progresses:

Only overtake on the straights and give people plenty of room (no diving up the inside going into a bend, remember: he isn’t Sete Gibernau and you definitely aren’t Valentine Rossi).

Always look out for flags and adhere to what ever the marshals tell you.
The key to a good track day is to just try and improve your own laps and not try to beat anyone else.

If you feel the group you are in is too fast/slow for you then ask to be moved – you will have more fun if you’re in the right group.
Don’t feel you have to stay out for an entire session, if your tired come in.

REMEMBER MOST CRASHES ARE BECAUSE POPLE ARE TRYING TO RACE OTHER PEOPLE.

MOST IMPORTANTLY HAVE FUN

There is a camp site right beside Llandow where we all camp as you cannot get into track untill the morning.

From plymouthin a van you are looking at between 2.5 and 3 hours I think.
