What is it ? I bought a can for £6.50, but it just looks like spray white grease , which i can buy from work for about £2.00 ?
Is it the same stuff

I have some silkolene spray grease and yup thats all it is, white grease.

Scotoiler is the way to go

I wouldn't bother with a scotoiler cos they make so much mess as does white chain lube. At least if you have to oil the chain yourself you know it's done. I use Rockoil on mine. Its well tacky and doesn't go through the chain so much as you spray it on thus less mess. If you clean your chain with WD40 when you wash it it will stay looking nice and new. Trust me I'm a bike valeter.

Scotoiler must be to high then, mine doesnt.

so in about 2 years, when this tin has gone, i can blag a can of white grease from work then ?

I'd also like to add, some the expensive wax does claim to seal in the oil, and is very heat resistant, the only problem I find is that the was can build up around the gearchange collar and make gearchanging very difficult if it builds up too much.

I use rockoil and a wax lube about once a week, in between this my chain still finds the time to build up some rust, I don't care what anyone else says, I am going to get a scotoiler the first chance I get. I don't care about the mess, there's plenty of that on my bike already

My Scottoiler has never sprayed much, I found it ALOT cleaner than normal chain loob/wax (Unless you want to spend the time removing all excess loob from every link) Scottoiler oil is alot easier to remove from the wheels etc anyway, just wipe off with a old rag.

Scottoiler will save you money in the long run, keeping your chain in top condition with aerosols will require endless amounts of degreasents and loob/wax, bad weather you'll want to re-loob every 100-200 miles, probably more. I expect you'll go through a can in no time. Whereas I've probably used 500ml (£5) of oil in the last 2 years and saved godknows how many hours.

Your average rider who only loobs the chain every once and a while will save a HUGE amount with a scottoiler.

I now use a silkolene spray on lube, it's really nice and tacky. I used to use the wurth dry chain lube, fark that now!

I've always used PJ1, when put on at the end of the ride it would always keep the chain looking oily & with very little fling.
Despite my experience of PJ1, others have slagged it off big time.
I normally buy the Blue tin, but last time I bought some I bought the black tin - what a pile of crap. Applied to warm chain as usual, took bike for ride next day & lube is everywhere!! PJ1 black has now been relegated to oiling my gate hinges.
Have bought another tin of PJ1 blue, goes on very thin but the propellant evaporates leaving nice sticky lube (the thin propoellant seems to help it get right into the chain).

I agree with the comments about chain waxes - they do seem to clog things up.

I use white ceramic chain lube stuff. Mainly because I think it looks better having a white faced chain than it does an oily one and it hardly flings (and I am an obsessive bike cleaner).


if I get caught in rain I clean the chain off completetly with WD40 before reapplying the chain lube.

One thing I was always told from an early age in riding, was never to put WD40 on a chain,

The Reason:

Well go buy a pair of rubber gloves and spray the stuff on them and watch the rubber melt away, remember the chain has rubber gromits inside which will also melt away.
