Hi can anyone help
My son is currently 15 and 16 in January. We Have bought him the bike ( aprilla RS50)but am currently trying to insure it, no one will do it for him unitl January, thats ok in theory but what if in the mean time is gets stolen or worse still catches alight, I could insure it in my name but the problem with that is a will need to register it then in my name to tax it and i don't wanna do that just to change it over in January.
Any ideas i will be more than gratefull

if it is off the road then don't worry about tax as ur son won't ride it until january, so you won't have to change the reg docs, although i don't see why u have to change them for tax, all i remember taking in was my insurance docs and the old tax disc. i may be wrong tho but u should be able to insure it and get the tax while the reg docs are in his name.

The bike has been off the road for over 12 months so it has to be registered and you can't have the registration documents in one name and the insurance in another, otherwise that would open up a whole big can of worms, people without insurance would be getting their mates to tax their cars and bike for them.
If the law is different for bikes than cars please let me know as i'm not sure. I want the bike taxed cause then i can run around on it now and again, if it's gonna breakdown i'd rather it happened to me than my son when he's just started out.

Under current legislation, the registration doc.'s MUST be in the name of the current keeper. If the person selling it does not complete and return the relevant sections of the V5, THEY are liable to a fine. The vehicle MUSt be either taxed or SORN'd.
However, you CAN insure a vehicle not registered in your name, it's just not all companies that do it, and generally third party only if they do. Few (if any?) will do Fire & Theft only though ..... try a comapny that specialises in Classic vehicles (like carole nash) and see what they can suggest / offer?

It's already tucked up safely in the garage. I just wanted to insure it to be on the safe side.

Glad we finally got it through the MOT.
With regards to insurance you basically have two options.
1. Register the bike in your name then just add it onto your GPX policy. This will be very cheap and means you can ride it whenever you want. Obviously this has the disadvantage that you will have to change the V5 in January.
2. Keep phoning around, you son should be able to insure the bike even without a valid licence. First try whichever company you are insured with other than that try Carole Nash, Bennetts or NU. You should be able to buy TP, f&T cover even tho he obviously can't ride it.

Well 2 hours and 15 mins later ( thank god it is the works phone) I still have had no joy with this insurance.
1 I can't insure it in his name as the computers will not let his details go any further than his DOB as he's not 16 yet
2 They have all said in order for me to register it i must be the registered keeper, thats all ok but on the log book it will add another person to the number of previous keepers and i would like to keep this as low as poss.
So it looks like it lock up the bike nice and securely and hope nothing happens to it, however Bennets did say they can do him a policy 30 days before he's 16 so i only have to wait another 20 days and it can be done.

Surprised Bennetts can do a policy 30 days before his birthday - did they not mean they can do it in Dec but it will still start on his birthday.
I'm only querying this because one of the proviso's of anyone holding normal RTA insurance is on the basis they have a licence - also be aware that if he can insure it before his birthday, he will still be 16 rather than 17 when it's due for renewal (and will be dearer).
I see from previous posts that you run your own business - could you not have a word with your fleet insurers and explain the situ in full, they may be willing to assist (bearing in mind the premium your business pays). I'm only saying this as since I have been back dealing with commercial insurances (I'm a broker) it still surprises me how flexible some insurers can be (i've added quads/unregistered machines/employees cars etc to fleet policies - having explained the full facts).

Probably need a competition licence number - even though, it's only a tenner for ACU trials licence.

yh i thought they'd be a catch,
its only january, thats like, just over a month, i'd keep it locked the f*ck up! locks everywhere and to solid things, should help it last the month, dont be tempted to get it out and clean it in the drive way in full view and stuff like that

SUCCESS
I finally managed to insure it today, although the policy doesn't start for him to ride til 9th January when he's 16, I will post the reg number and a photo and if anyone see's him acting a TW+T please email him as i have assured him I will scrap it, I have pointed out to him this has the ability to leave me childless,
Prices were vastly different though, Carole Nash wanted £901 yet bennets wanted £542, so i worked it out, book value on the bike is about £1300, paid £542 plus £300 excess if it gets nicked they only gotta fork out £468
Main thing is it's done thank heavens,
Thanks to every one that gave me advice it helped get hrough this minefield
