Ok, so who has it? what system do you have? how do you get the maps updated and at what cost?


I have Autoroute 2006 on my Laptop, and with a USB GPS receiver that worked really well in France, with a passenger watching it ...... but it isn't practical on your own .... I would like somtheing that could synch with a computer though, as it seems easier to set the route on a PC ?

Looking for suggestions / recomendations really, upto about £250

TomTom, the postcode search is better on the TomTom.
Routes are automatically worked out, none of them link to a PC for route setting as far as I know, only for updates and backups.
Most support POI files such as speed camera databases etc.
Do you need european maps? Some of the cheaper ones are UK only, or only have major european roads.
Heard good things about the Mio as well, can be used on the bike through an earpiece (bluetooth???) and euro maps etc, good price.

but it was less than half the offer price shown there, and only a little more than a UK specific TomTom One

gav downloaded me a version of tom tom for my phone, along with a blue tooth gps reciever (£25 ebay) i have full sat nav.

guess u can download various countries maps for tinternet

does it work on al phone? with colour screen ect?

As far as I know you need a Symbian (sp?) spec phone for it to work.

Indeed that is correct - a "Smartphone" running Symbian S60 type software seems the most common - and I'm keeping watch for the right deal on ebay too

I just splashed out on one of these.

Jace sold it to me at his work with no discount i'm afraid to say but got it in the sale for a half desent price me thinks.

Driving down to Italy this year so should come in handy.

Just downloaded my Tomtom software and checking out alternative routes around Italy and look i have already found. Leaving car at home me thinks

S60 phones, Heres a list of supported phones: http://www.s60.com/life/s60phones/browseDevices.do I had a 6600 which works perfectly fine and it's probably very cheap by now!

You can also use any mobile which uses Windows Mobile OS, like O2 XDA's, this would probably be better than a S60 phone since the screen is normally bigger. It's basically a PDA with phone stuff ontop.

You'll also need a memory card, 128MB would do for the S60 (Only the UK map) but memory is so cheap these days, a 1GB card is under £10.

I Run a garmin 2610 on the bike better than the tom tom as you can download maps and plan routes via a PC and download the route onto the unit, also if you ever ride off road, greenlanes etc it is very good at finding lanes and routes that will not appear on the tom tom.
The tom tom is a very good unit but not so good if you want to travel abroad.

Why do you say this??

The 710 i have now covers all Europeon roads not just major ones and you can download alternative more scenic routes via thier web site if you want straight to it.

I'm yet to use it abroad so is there something i don't know. Please let me know before i go off on my adventures

Yeah i tried that last year to the south of France. The prob is with the French is that they don't give you any warning when your next junction is nearing and they can't drive nethier. Thought this would be safer as i can't read or speak French or Italian.

the only fully waterproof tom tom i have used is the tt rider i kept it for i month and sold it via ebay never used any other tt unit but i ran a post on a overlanding site about gps when i had the tom tom and 80% of the riders most of them travel abroad europe and the middle east and africa say the garmin bike units are the best, and since owning one i have to say i agree.
I dont think europe is so much of a problem with other units its when you want to go outside of europe that the garmin quest, 2610 etc come into there own..
