Matey who bought my trackbike just emailed me pics of what turned out to be a nightmare of his 1st trackday on the old blue bannana.

Collected Thursday evening trackday at Rockingham on the Friday.

Started off well

This is Matt by the way soon to be a SWB member

But then due to the oil filter coming loose and covering the rear with oil

But then it went up in flames and had to be extiguished

How bad do i feel.

Just don't understand it, as it was fine at Llandow and Pembrey.

He is being great it about and a top bloke.

Got bike running again but forks are bent plus other usual bits like clip on and levers

SAD SAD NEWS

holy poop, thats seriously bad luck for that guy but its a chance you take with used bikes. dont beat yourself up about it mate. we went donny a few years ago and my mate had exactly the same problem happen on his vstrom but luckily he kept it upright and pulled over out the way

I know someone who was running the same session ... he had some interesting things to say when I asked him about this (PM'd you with all of it, Mark).

Most importantly though - the guy ran for a couple of laps with smoke coming out and everyone could smell the oil burning. They were all waiting for the marshalls to pull him in, but they didn't. When he went down the marshalls sprayed it "just in case" - it didn't go up in flames. Later the bike was "just a CBR with its sump off and some slightly dirty bodywork". Don't feel guilty Mark - it was avoidable - he would've smelt the oil/seen the smoke and could've stopped before binning it.

PERSONAL OPINION..
I WOULDN'T.. LUCKILY I KNOW SOMEWHERE I CAN TEST AN UNROADWORTHY BIKE..
NO OFFENCE MENT..
I WOULDNT FANCY TAKING A BIKE MILES FROM HOME NOT KNOWING ITS MECHANICALLY SOUND..
THEN AGAIN.
A LOOSE OIL FILTER WOULDNT BE TOP OF MY CHECK LIST..
NOTE TO ONES SELF.. CHECK OIL FILTER OCCASIONALLY..
I KNOW HOW GUTTING IT IS TO BIN A BIKE, FEEL FOR MATEY..
HOPE HE IS MECHANICALLY SOUND HIMSELF.. BONES ETC..
AND IT WONT COST TO MUCH TO GET BACK ON THE TARMAC..

it certainly can happen to anyone, i just sold a boat and the engines were inspected by an engineer and ran up from cold and he was happy, then we went out for a run for about an hour or so and they ran fine, so the prospective owner was happy, the sale went through and the first time he went out on it the boat started taking on water from a leaking hose which was fine on the sea trial. So it just goes to show you can only take so many precautions as to condition..........

Cheers for your replys folks and the PM Jak. People keep saying its just the way of the world and all that and to be honest its not your problem. But you know how it is you just feel a bit bad no matter the issue with the sale.

Luckily he is a top bloke and probably reading this.

K7 DAVE yeah i would help him as that is the type of chap i am as would we all would. But to yet he hasn't asked :?

Just seems sooo odd !!! Bike has been fine before as you lot have seen :?

Seemed fine at Llandow. Really strange that this should happen and you're bound to feel bad but it's one of those things.

He may be reading this and a top bloke and I hope he doesn't take offence at this but you don't know what he did between buying it and taking it to the track.

Personally I would have changed the oil and filter immediately on any bike I bought in a private sale...

Just something to consider.

Just something that happens i spose. Next time lockwire maybe an option if he's worried about another occurance of it.

shit happens....not your fault.

id check a whole load of things but how tight the oil filter was would not be one of them. (probably will from here on in though!)
