Had a guy come to look at the bike im selling at the moment, he was really happy and said he take it. Spent a while haggling and came to a price. He then said he'd pay by cheque, but got all bent out of shape when i said i wanted cash. I wasn't out of line by asking for cash was i? he said he local and everything but at the end of the day im not too happy watching someone ride away on my bike with only a piece of paper in my hand, which despite his best assurances might be a duff.

id be exactly the same,youd be stupid to let him ride it away,atleast wait until the cheque cleared and was in your account before he had it, i dont see how anybody would expect you to go through with it that way!

You did the right thing, you cannot trust anyone. No cash no bike.The other way to do it is to bank the cheque, when its cleared they can have the bike,i have done that before when selling a car

Or perhaps a Banker's Draft - which is as good as cash.

Got to be careful even with a banker's draft. Fakes are very popular.

To be honest I'd only take cash and I think you did the right thing refusing a cheque.

be careful with cheques too, it will show in your account after a few days BUT it takes a couple of weeks to clear so if it is a bad one the bank will take the cash back out again and your bike is long gone, always ask for cash

I wouldn't be happy taking a cheque. If need be I'd have it, give him a signed receipt and he can have the bike when the cheque is cleared.

Whatever it is - bank cheque, bankers draught, building society cheque, they're all forgeable Never let go of the bike 'til it's been cleared by your bank and they say it's OK to let it go. The only thing I would say is if you were only prepared to accept cash you should have made it clear in the advert ...... that said if he's local it's not much issue for him to come back with the cash later is it

I think he was out of line if he was expecting to give you a cheque and take the bike that day. He could have been as honest as they come but is it really worth the worry? I did sell a bike for a cheque once but it stayed in my garage until it had cleared an I didn't use the bike.

I think if you are going to look at something for private sale you assume the seller wants cash.

also its not a huge amount, i took out far more and all i had to do was bring a some ID, drivers license was fine. The fact he kicked up such a fuss made me more supicious.

Moose are you sure you wont accept an i.o.u note, a still valid return train ticket from exeter to london and half a book of second class stamps?

The iou - we have plenty of toilet paper thanks, the ticket is worthless to me as I get them for free ( ) the stamps might come in useful though
