not only that they will use it as an excuse to stop you and give you and the bike a thorough going over to see what else they can find,

DVLA:
"It is an offence to alter, rearrange or misrepresent letters or numbers in order to form names or words or in such a way that
makes it difficult to read the registration number. Characters must not be moved from one block to the other e.g. AB51 DVL
must not be displayed as AB5 1DVL or AB 51DVL. Vehicles with illegally displayed number plates may FAIL the MoT
test. The police can also issue fixed penalty fines for illegally displayed number plates. Offenders are liable to a MAXIMUM
FINE of £1,000 and in some cases the mark may be withdrawn.
For vehicles with new or replacement number plates fitted after 31.8.2001, “3-line”"
Does a small plate count as an "illegally displayed number plate"??

as long as u can fit all the characters on the plate and they are the right size/spacing there should not be a problem

but is that legally possible on a 9x3 plate, personally is it worth the hassle of getting police attention just for a small plate

Dont bother mate, especially on a learner bike. The police will rape you every chance they get. Save your money and do your test then you can be the cooliest kid at school with a big boys bike and the girls outside the chip shop will love you.

i got pulled twice on mine with a 'letterbox style' plate. luckily no fine, just producers. its not woth the hassle or the talking down too. just go 8x7, its smaller than the massive plate u have but still looks 'legal'.
of course if you ride a harley u can have a 1x4 letterbox style plate, american style font and straight thru pipes and the police will ignore you as you set off car alarms on acceleration.

My thoughts exactly, if you ever speak to a traffic cop (I do regularly through work) they'll tell you it's an easy pull. If they think you look even mildly suspicious, then the plate gives them a legit excuse to stop you. Then you run the risk of other things being noticed, like race cans, black visor, wrong hair colour etc
Not worth the hassle.

I just have an inch smaller on both sides. Even fooled my MOT tester
As it happens I have just received this email:
Limited time left to purchase your Showplates
You may have seen in the press that from 1st November 2008 it will become an offence to sell or manufacture registration plates that do not conform to the latest British Standards and design criteria laid down by the DVLA.
Consequently the ability to purchase Showplates displaying non-legal fonts/spacing/images/slogans etc will be outlawed.
As a result, My Showplates can only supply Showplates until 30th October 2008.
With this date looming and Christmas fast approaching we wanted to give you as much notice as possible to enable you to place your orders and avoid any disappointment. Here is a direct link to our website:

We appreciate and thank you for your past support.
