Anyone have a view on the XR 400 in Supermoto guise? It seems to be very tall.

I have been offered a '54 plate bike very clean a sensible money but know vey little about the bike itself.

I have a standard wheel XR400 which I use for Road Trials & Greenlaning. Pretty competant at this sort of thing but they are a bit heavy compared to newer stuff. They go on for ever with regular oil changes etc. Fairly easy to start unless you've had it upside down & then it takes a fair bit of kicking & the right technique to start it again.

As a road bike they are very short geared, on standard gearing (with a bigger profile off road tyre) 70mph is tiring, I would imagine with 17" Supermoto wheels & low profile tyres you'll need to gear it up as much as you can within the hub / front sprocket guard limits.

If it's been used as a SM, I'd just make sure it's not been run low on oil if it's spend most of it's life at higher road going revs.

Thanks Graham.

I have also PM'd Bondy on speedy's advice and will take both of your points into consideration before making the purchase.
