THE government is to cut the national speed limit from 60mph to 50mph on most of Britain’s roads, enforced by a new generation of average speed cameras.
The reduction, to be imposed as early as next year, will affect two thirds of the country’s road network. Drivers will still be able to reach 70mph on motorways and dual carriageways and 60mph on the safest A roads.
Bugger
It's the average speed cameras that are the real pain

I think you have to read it and take in the parts that are practical to implement:
Drivers will still be able to reach 70mph on motorways and dual carriageways and 60mph on the safest A roads.
So that means no change to most A roads then and these average speed cameras on normal A roads won't work too well if all it means is that as soon as you pass one doing 80 plus you pull over and have a fag before going past the second dropping your average speed or turn off before passing the second, you can't do that on a motorway they have you trapped and these things are no doubt as expensive as hell and need to be mounted in pairs obviously so nothing stopping you turning round after passing the first one and going back the other way, its just scare tactics as usual..........

well brown has to make some money back somehow doesn't he. I mean after doing such an awesome job on the rest of the country he no doubt needs a holiday. what better way to pay for it than a nice little earner from you friendly motorist who lets face it has got away scot free from contributing to the 'holiday fund'. Dr years now. Hold on what am i saying ? The [Censored] government are [Censored] us over again, just when you think it couldn't get any worse, they [censored] you another way. Time to get get all those extra points, pay the fine (revenue), do the course(revenue) loose the license, use public transport (joke and revenue). Yes i can see this as a valid exercise in road safety as all these cams will be installed on recognised accident black spots and is not at all a money printing rouse. This countrys attitude to its people and their rights absolutly sucks ass.

Nothing new! It's been happening for years!
How many rural roads now have reduced speed limits posted on them? Look around your local area & see how many roads have lower than national speed limits posted on them. I'm betting there are hundreds!
For example the A39 from Street through to Bridgewater has been 50MPH for ages.
Councils have had the power to implement reduced speed limits for several years. This just puts it more on a National basis.

Indeed, and of course as a side effect to the road safety impact, by reducing speed limits they also reduce various criteria for their maintenance requirements too .... i.e. resurface less often, leave potholes longer, etc.,

The average speed camera's in use now are forward facing arn't they?

Most average speed cameras at the moment are forward facing..... so can't get the rear plate on your bike anyway. And also on A roads it would be completely impractical as some people have houses right next to the road and other such things and the number of junctions to turn off mean that they would just be wasting there money on paperwork and expenses to buy/install cameras. Scaremongering i think.

I thought the whole idea of rising the cost of motoring was to fund public transport but hasn't the price of that rocketed, like trains after they were privertised. In wich case why are the government funding private companies

.
The other excuse is the environment....yeh my arse. I'm all for being green but they just use it as an excuse

.
No Si got it right I think. They need more money so why not hit the gulable motorist becasue no matter what they throw at us we still use our cars etc and don't complain about the cost
