It's about restricting new car drivers in the way that motorcyclists are
restricted until they have more experience.

If everyone is sure it works for us, why on earth would not work for
them? A little parity before the law?

Most of us are also car drivers, and I think that generally there's too much rather than to little red tape and regulation in this country. New drivers are to an extent limited by the cost of insurance to the car they can afford. Lorries have speed limiters to stop them exceeding the motorway speed limit. I wouldn't have a problem if authorities wanted to extend that to cars across the board, perhaps with a 5 or 10 second over ride facility for overtaking. I have a car, bike, lorry and tractor licence, and I get frustrated with people picking on one sector. I've had more near misses after not being seen by elderly rather than young drivers. Also if the cars are too restricted, then aren't they going to hold up other road users, especially up hills?

Personally i would like to see all road users have to do a compulsory refesher training every 2/3 years - not a retest as I don't see anything to gain from that apart from more money the DVLA and people rely on their transport for work or a way of life and the prospect of loosing that isn't fair on anyone. Just a lilttle bit of training to ensure that you are still up to scratch and asses skills.

Insurance is the biggest thing. I'm 19 just renewed the insurance on my r6, £325 tpo.
Insurance quotes for my 1991 988cc micra are £1400 fully comp which is cheaper than tpo and tpft.

I hate this country.

insurance for cars is irrelevant, if you can afford at £100k ferrari at 18 then you can/should afford the insurance,just like if you passed your test at 21( will be 24 in 2013) and bought a desmoseidici at £40k then you can/should be able to pay the insurance without whinging about it.

20% of accidents are caused by under 24 year olds, so that means that the other 80% is made up by us older clumsier gits. its a absolute farce if you ask me,all these statistics can be changed to how you want people to read them

My take is simple - What applies to one category of normal road vehicle should apply to all others. If teenagers need to be protected from themselves on motorbikes, then surely the same applies to cars - especially as cars are now cheaper to buy than bikes, comparatively, hence more just wait until they're 17 and go straight to cars.

I've never understood the logic in allowing a person who's never sat in a vehicle before, to go straight out onto busy public roads ...... I remember the first ride on my first motorbike - I bought a CG125 in Bridford and had to ride it back to Exeter along the Dunsford road in the rain - I don't think I had been more panic-stricken before

I have always been a firm supporter of CBT, and have always thought it should be applied to cars too. There is also the iniquity that you HAVE to have professional training to some degree to be able to ride a bike on the road (CBT), whereas it is still possible to get in a car and drive with any (suitably licenced) numpty beside you.

This i deffo agree. Having been a Forklift Examiner, some companies have strict 12 month refresher policy with which i would have the ability to withdraw their licence if i felt they needed further training and assessing.

This happens now in our company to.

I also agree with the the topic of thread and even bring in some of the Aussie laws for new drivers like new curfew times and even single occupent rule obviously being the driver until set time after passing test.
