what is the expected life of a properly maintained and lubed chain.?

and what is the advantage of a heavy duty chain.?

the reason i am asking is that i am changing from belt drive to chain on my big twin Harley .

i broke the belt on Thursday n the way home after a nice ride to Lands End about 400mls, 6mls from home i missed a gear overtaking a caravan the belt when bang!!!
also which is the best for price chain breaker/riveter as i will probably need one

Badly looked after chain = 5,000miles or so (naturally depends on the original quality and stuff)
Fairly well looked after chain = 10-15,000miles
Anally looked after chain = 20-30,000miles
Scottoiled chain = 20-30,000miles too

Wifes bike has done 15,000miles from new, 7 years old and still on the original chain. Always scottoiled, barely stretched, sprockets look pretty much new too.

I got my chain breaker/riveter from eBay, does the job just fine.
