Hello technicals,
After riding in to work this morning and having the coldest hands known to man I have come to the decision to cough up some dough and get some heat, trouble is I am torn between some heated grips (well wrap around oxford hot hands to be precise as they are eaeier to remove and pretty cheap) or some winter gloves, any views on the matter or experiences good and bad, or even advice on some good gloves!?

I have a set of heated grips on mine, handy to have all year round remember t'atp heated grips take a while to heat up so if your trip is a short one they won't do much of a job. I rode mine home today after working nights,, it was damn cold but didn't bother with heat on, plus most grips don't heat up until charging circuit kicks in at roughly 5000 rpm.

Decent gloves are a must though, thicker gloves don't always mean warmer gloves. You still have to be able to move your fingers.

I have the wrap around Oxford heated grips in winter only, I have a pair of Spada enforcer gloves and as soon as I wore them I stopped using the heated grips. I have a metal plate in left hand so if that gets cold it hurts. Gloves are a good starting point to keep your hands warm but grips will only heat inside of your hand, I hand hand guards on the Bandit one winter and that helped alot, bit extreme for spring use hence my bike changes alot over winter and summer

Get a pair of decent winter gloves first, but decent doesn't mean expensive. I have a pair of Buffalo winter gloves, have kept my hands warm but only cost around £40 when i bought them a couple of years ago. As spring has arrived you will start getting the sales soon and you may get a good bargain on winter gloves.

As an extra faff but deff worth it if your hands suffer... Heated gloves. I bought a pair about 6 years ago and they work wonders. Rode up to Basingstoke from Exeter one eve with them when it was sub zero and I didn't thihk much was happening until I didn't replug one of them in after a fuel stop. My left hand soon froze. Good heated gloves heat up on the back of the hand, keeping the wind chill off.
I have since replaced the above gloves due to age, wear and tear but with the same brand of Keis. Not the cheapest things around at £65 I found mine for. Also work as general winter gloves if not plugged in. Bit of a faff with cables but you soon adapt to it. I wouldn't be with out them. Good even on a short trip but prob not so good for ye battery on short journies.

Ive seen this post come up a few times over the years!!

Ive had various heated grips including the expensive ones oxford. I found that when the heat finally made a difference it was only the insides of my palms/fingers that got any benefit. Ive riden in some really cold weather including a couple of new years ago having to trudge through ice and snow covered roads but the fronts of my fingers and backs of my hands where bloody freezing and took a while for my fingers to actually start working so i could get money out to pay a cashier for my fuel! so in my humble opinion they are a complete and utter waste of time and money!!! I think a good set of winter gloves adn maybe some inner gloves are far better

Gloves are the first point of call, mine were £50 last year, think they were £65 retail but best ones I've had, like I said stop using the grips on Rich's SV. Inner gloves don't do it for me as limit hand movement and make movement painfull (problem with a metal plate and pins in hand). Buy a decent pair of gloves and go from there. Mine are warm enough for the snow riding I did this winter, better than the last pair I had.

Heated grips wont keep your hands warm in the rain if your gloves are crap.

Get some good gloves.

Bought a dirt cheap set of heated grips from J&S at Filton back in January.. paid £25 instead of opting for the pricey Oxford sports ones which are frankly crap.
Easy to fit and warm as toast..never have them on more than half power as they get so toasty..easy to use dial..better than the awkward push button of the Oxford ones ( try altering the temp whilt on the move with those)
Once you have heated grips you will never want to go without them again
