How much are you looking to spend?
Unless you can afford a bike less than 3 years old, just get the best conditioned/looked after bike you can find for your budget rather than being blinkered into finding a particular make model. It's your first big bike, you probably won't be able to tell the difference between the two.
Also see Monkey's ZX636 in the classifieds - that's a clean bike (and it's only ever been riden like a pussy

).

Neither - IL4s have no character
Seriously though ... have you considered a Triumph 675 Daytona?
Widely regarded as the best middleweight out there.

Harold - I think it suits you!
erm, have you not actullay been to a few bike dealers, had a sit on a few etc? Some bikes 'fit' better?
Whatever first 600 you have will be "awesome" - find the best you can for the monies you have...
oh and just an idea...but have you thought about a naked 600? With the addition of a couple of crash bungs it'll save you hoooge ££
WHEN you drop it..... my 2p
so Harold, off you shop! And dont forget to post up a pic of your purchase

Good plan - if you can, get some test rides so that you can try sitting on them when they are moving

Now that's sorted just one more hoop to jump through. Introduce yourself, tell us where you are and a ickle bit about you.
It doesn't matter what size bike you choose really. Chances are if you can't handle a 1k you won't be able to handle a 600 either. 600's can be as quick as 1k's on the road. If I were in your position again I'd consider a 636 or the Daytona. I wouldn't second glance at the gixxer. Not that its crap, I just don't like um!!
