you can normally get away with an 8x6 unless the inspector is a real asshole.

I presume they fail them now unless they have the BSI stamp and makers postcode on them . Also, there is no "minimum size" requirements for bike number plates. Minimum character size is applicable and minimum distances between letters and borders. Less characters you have ,the smaller the plate you can legally have.
Character Height 64mm
Character Width 44mm
Character Stroke 10mm
Space between characters 10mm
Space between groups 30mm
Top, side & bottom margin 11mm
Space between vertical lines 13mm

I couldn't condone such behaviour...

Why do people persist with this bo**ox of "got to put baffles in for MOT"

They cannot fail the bike on exhaust noise unless it truly is horrendous - in which case you shouldn't be riding it anyway!
I have never put baffles in the TL for MOT's, and only on a couple of occasions have they seen fit to endorse the MOT with a "Note: Noisy Exhaust" advisory on the MOT. I have, however, had to put them in for trackdays .....

but that sorta proves my point anyway .....

They are about, but ive never had any problems with a slightly smaller plate, as far as the can, i put my baffle back in and still got a noisy advisory, cant win em all

I stick a big over with double sided tape when I get to MOT and remove before leaving.

why? An advisory is just that - advice. The bike still passed, it makes no difference to the overall outcome, and is just a meaningless comment on a piece of paper no-one reads from one year to the next!
