I can only advice on the car front, but in my opinion
Probably better to get a couple year older golf rather than a french car,
And definitely stay away from the newer 1.4/1.6hdi Peugeot or citreon engines.
what sort of millage are you planning on doing a year?

At that mileage a diesel makes more sense from an mpg perspective, but repair costs of an older diesel engine (80-100k miles+) are much more expensive (turbo's, injectors, high pressure fuel pumps, etc.) than a petrol engine of similar age/miles.

Utility suppliers are much of a muchness, tbh, best to try some of the comparison sites ........

Had a succession of petrol and (non-turbo) diesel Peugeot, Citroen & Renaults with no problems of any significance. Then we bought a Peugeot 807 Hdi .......... Oh boy, excellent people carrier it may have been, but electrical woes by the score meant we part ex'd it for a Passat estate and lost £3k in 12mths on top of the repair bills .......

Must be said, I agree with moosey, Think you will find that most modern diesel engines have peugeot technology in them in one way or another, I know BMW do. Vauxhall actually use Fiat 1.3 diesels and a bloody good engine too.
