Bristol, mini number plates

Post by JakeZXR »

I have a normal number plate on my ZXR400 atm but saw a gixxer the other day with a tiny single line plate which was really smart and I thought it would go quite nicely with my bike being slightly smaller

I know these are particularly condoned on some points but I've read quite a bit and apparently it's not too bad Aslong as it's still pretty readable

Basically anyone know where I can get one in Bristol or any sites who do custom really small plates?

Also anyone bored through the day this week fancy a ride?

i can give you the number of a lady in teignouth who does trade/show plates and they are pretty good for prices.

i used to have the letterbox style on mine but kept on getting pulled over so opted for the 8x6 instead of 9x7.

not been pulled yet(tempting fate now), it looks tidy and doesn't have any free advertising on it.

i believe now that it is only a fine but of up to £1000 but depending on how much you have pissed the copper off it could go downhill quickly. i have just read on another forum that one guy argued the point with the copper and he then went full bore.

pulled him for speeding - argued
asked about the plate - argued
copper smiled, pulled out his book then said that as the plate wasn't compliant with MOT standards that he was in fact riding without an MOT, so insurance was void. At this point he said he went very quiet and started thinking about bus journeys. copper read him the riot act, spoke down to him for about 30 mins in the back of the car then just booked him for the speeding.

so if you are going to and get a really small plate - be polite

In that instant the copper is a complete and utter f*ckwit, deserves no respect and is just using his uniform to flaunt a perceived position of authority over those he is supposed to be there to serve, not demean.

There is no way on earth that riding with a slightly smaller number plate could be conceived to be "riding without insurance". Minor infractions of construction & use regulations will not remove the obligations of an insurance comapny in the event of an accident - witness the poor chap likely to lose his house because a person he sold his bike to was riding illegally, caused an accident, died, yet becuase the previous keepers insurance was not cancelled the insurance company had to cough up .........

A lesson learned early on is if stopped, always be polite and take it on the chin - it is never worth arguing at the side of the road because you run the risk of turning said officer into the self-righteous missionary mentioned above. If you feel your innocence that strongly then take your fight to the court .... but they will rarely side with anyone but the officer unless you can prove unequivocably that you were in the right at the point in time.

Oh, and it's not always the size either ..... I have long used an 8"x6.5" plate - an odd size but it allows the use of full size digits/spacing depending on reg no., yet still got stopped as my plate was deemed "too far from vertical" by a following officer. When I clmly and politley pointed out that a) a speed camera had been able to read said plate 12mths previously and b) if it was fixed any more vertically the first pothole would see it shattered by the tyre hitting it (it was mounted just behind a vertical line from the wheel spindle) his comment was that it wasn't his problem and I should have left he bike standard ........
Of all the things I have ever lost, I miss my mind the most .....

Think you're asking for trouble with a single line plate IMHO. You'll be less likely to be pulled by the fuzz ( insert your own joke here) if its laid out on two lines like it should be but with the size slighty reduced. There is no minimum size with a bike plate, so if you have a plate with less digits on it, you can legally make it smaller.
Current fines are £100 and a possible 3 points.
Taken from Gov.UK motorcycle plates must be.......
Characters must be 64mm tall
Characters (except the number 1 or letter I) must be 44mm wide
The character stroke (the thickness of the black print) must be 10mm
The space between characters must be 10mm
The space between the age identifier and the random letters must be 30mm
The margins at the top, bottom and side of the plate must be at least 11mm
Vertical space between the age identifier and the random numbers must be 13mm
