As I don't have cornering ABS I've been playing around with corner braking, in particular the way the front can sit up when you brake whilst corning.

Before this ends in tears for me..., is it even possible to counteract/overcome this reaction by leaning in harder, or is the only option to reduce braking effort?

Yep.

Do some track days,you'll find that you can lots of stuff that you didn't think you could.
Just have to be strong enough to hold it in place.

If you get enough feeling in the front then you can brake right up to apex.

Silverstone and pembrey have a few good corner's where you can actually get your knee down and banked right over even before letting the brakes off.

I see a lot of people doing that going into the bus stop at Llandow too.

I think the trick is to corner while braking, not the other way round. But be careful when you release the brake, as the bike can lean even more!

Yeh, had a few moments last year where a corner tightened unexpectantly and I was too heavy on the front brake. Bike stood up and wanted to go straight on... certainly gets the adrenalin pumping.
I do now tend to brake into the corners, at least until I can see exit and know it's not going to tighten more.

I'm just playing at the moment though, trying to get the feel for overpowering the bike back into the lean when sudden braking is needed, but doing it on a small scale as I'm not on a track.

Rich have you tryed rear trail braking?

i know that guy. saw him the day after this happened, he was still a bit shaken. said the truck driver was too.

he was at pembrey with us in June.

This was going to be my suggestion, if you just need to scrub off a little speed whilst banked over using the rear brake does not sit the bike up like the front brake does.

If I come into a corner too hard, I will apply the front brake a little and keep on till speed is reduced enough to keep within the corner (trail braking). you should be able to feel the front tyre whether you need to let go of that brake, it feels unstable or bike stands up too much.

Suspension/chassis set-up makes a huge difference to the behaviour of the bike when corner braking. My Ducati used to be evil until I had it properly set up, now its very forgiving, better than either KTM despite having none of their fancy electronics.

It has been said (by Kevin Schwantz?) that if you have enough grip to brake, you have enough grip to get round the bend.
