Bikers in shorts/shirts etc

Post by CBRandy »

Just got back from a short ride and the amount of ppl out wearing little or no protective gear is crazy.pulled in to local cafe for a drink and got talking to a few other bikers who also mentioned it.so do you think it should be law to wear proper kit when out riding.the ones I saw weren't your young chavvy moped riders but riding proper bikes.
Thoughts on a postcard.

Ooohhh for the love of god don’t get me started.....

Considering the mess that will be made when you fall off I do question every time I see people on anything (including scooters) why they don’t ware protective gear and totally agree it should be a law.

Personal choice, just don’t expect any sympathy when you lose all the skin off your knee caps.

I always go out in all the kit, even ear plugs and back protector.

Just not worth the mess or piss taking I'd get from kim.

Don't forget there's still loads that if they could they would ride without lids.

As Matt said, personal choice but don't come crying and dragging your stumps to me if shorts and trainers were cooler. I'll take sweat over grafts any day.

I can remember seeing a pic a few years ago it was a before and after pic.
She was the most stunning looking looking girl.blonde etc and well the after pic was horrific.think the report said she lost 60% of her skin and had dozens of skin grafts

I always wear kit, either textile or leather, but it should be free choice not law.

very true I have a pair of hood jeans , and always wear an armoured jacket, I have been in this skin 60 years now and grinding it away on a road

If you make it the law to wear sensible kit then what is the legal definition going to be? Must be leather not textiles for best protection maybe? Must have loadsa reflective orange on it maybe? Must be full one piece maybe?
And to make motorcycling safer perhaps bring in a power limit and tamper proof speed governors????
It could be argued there'd be no motorcyclists clogging up A&E departments if bikes were banned completely?

You might get the idea.....I'm very much for freedom of choice, and yes, my personal choice is to wear what I believe is the best gear I can afford no matter what the weather.
old and disgraceful so doing what I can while I can before I can't

It’s an unfortunate dichotomy that the freedoms we cherish such as not being forced to wear head-to-toe dayglo gear permit the skin crayons to ride around in beach wear, but it’s their choice. We were a bit hot and sweaty arriving home in full leathers after the final slow bit yesterday, but I’ll take that minor discomfort over a skin graft anyday.

Having been down the road in leather jacket and denim jeans (quite a few years back when it was normal attire), i can confirm that when A&E use small nail brush to clean out the scrapes, it does smart a little bit.

Exactly ^:)^

My position is everyone has the choice/freewill to make their own decisions on what they wish to wear. If you go down the route of making it a legal requirement to wear PPE, that means you can't just hop on the bike for a few yards up the road after making adjustments; if there are found to be defects in your gear insurance claims (for personal injury) can be reduced; all gear will require CE marking; any adjustments/repairs will only be able to be undertaken by qualified/licensed businesses (bye-bye Gerry); where does legislation stop - boots, trousers, gloves, jackets, helmet ..... but then visibility is an issue, so best make all that gear fluorescent .... ooh, and better make it a requirement to have airbag technology; As it's a safety item, better include your gear in the MOT process (like seat belts & airbags); oh, you'll have to carry a complete set of CE approved waterproof gear too...... Oh, and this applies whether you're on a c50 commuting, a trail bike greenlaning or a sports bike, etc. Don't forget all this gear will have to have time/age limits too as it's PPE and you'll be subject to fines if it's damaged, out of date, etc..... Where does it end?

I suggest shut up, wear what you think is right, and just shrug your shoulders (mutter under your breath, even) and smile smugly to yourself if you see someone in what you consider in appropriate gear

Bit of a stupid reply.but as you said each to three own.me personally will always wear all my kit every time.i didnt spend 1,000 quid on leathers to have them sat at home if its bit warm.apnd your comment bout riding few yards down road.how long does it take for a accident!!!!!!

Ah... :-?

Would I ride without full gear... no, but I don't wear my best gear all the time, I adjust it based on the conditions and where I'm going.

Should it be law - No, I also don't think it should.
If someone doesn't want to wear more than the legal minimum protective equipment then let natural selection decide whether to remove them from the gene pool.

Sorry in advance if this is also a stupid reply.
