Riding in Dartmoor

Post by DaveH »

Hi all - I've been away for a while but I'm spending this weekend with the wife at a hotel on Dartmoor. Can anyone recommend good routes to ride and site-seeing places to visit by bike on Dartmoor?

Thanks very much :D

This one may be worth a visit, it's a bit bizarre to say the least :)

THE HIGHWAYMAN INN
Sourton
(Nr Okehampton)
Devon

An Aladdin's cave of hidden treasures and gothic architecture, music from bygone eras that "takes you back" and dimly lit bars full of curiosities make The Highwayman Inn truly something special.

If you are really brave you could stay in one of the haunted rooms overnight

Sally the owner is awesome

You didn't say which part of the moor the hotel is in, but a nice route that can be joined anywhere .......

Moretonhampstead - Whiddon Down - Okehampton - Sourton - Tavistock - Princetown - Two Briges - Pondsgate - Ashburton - Bickington - Bovey Tracey - Moretonhampstead

You can short-cut back across the main Two bridges - Moreton road if you wish, and for the Ashburton - Bovey and Whiddon Down - Sourton bits stick to the old roads, not the dual carriageway :D

Castle Drogo, Fingle Bridge, Steps Bridge, Bellever, Lydford gorge all nice for a walk, Widdecombe or Bovey for a cream tea, and the road from Moreton - Exeter is a very nice route too :D

To be honest, you can't go far wrong with pretty much anywhere/any road there (other than the 40mph limit  ) 8)
Of all the things I have ever lost, I miss my mind the most .....

Handle stressful situations like a dog - If you can't eat it or play with it, pee on it and walk away

On my way to plymouth I regularly go over the moors now the weather is better, go via holne-two bridges- princetown and yelverton pop into cap'n jaspers for a bite to eat then back via yealmpton, modbury, halwell, dartington, buckfast, that'll take you onto the moors again. A great mix of fast roads and twisties.

The warren inn on dartmorr near postbridge is a good nice lil pub that does good food. I Wouldn't go Old Inn in widecombe anymore, since it changed hands it's come over all 'weatherspoony' go to the rugglestone near it instead, a good lil pub that does good portions but is a bit 'local'
