Leaving it in gear and rolling the throttle on, rather than dropping a gear ......... relying on mid-range torque to pull you through rather than working the engine/gearbox and using revs and BHPRicky_t wrote: ........Please can you elaborate on what you mean by riding it like a car? Unless you're talking about flat-slide carbs, it should be the other way around. Open the throttle on a bike with CV carbs and it relies on the increased intake pressure/vacuum to lift the throttle slide progressively whereas with an injected bike the amount you twist the throttle is directly proportional to the amount of fuel squirted into the engine.Funky wrote: I know that one of the biggest differences between my last r6 and the k4's from a riding perspective is carbs vs injection with the carbs being more instant and 'raw'. On my (limited) experience I would disagree ......... I would be interested to ride an older Tuono, because I thought the new style one I rode at the Aprilia test day earlier this year was very disappointing - cr*p eventhe engine (with stock cans) was wheezy, the riding position (high but very forward footpegs) strange, and the cornering very "tippy" with little feeling of the front end. Not at all what I was expecting .....
thats interesting, I dont think I've ever heard anyone give feedback concerning the riding position quite like that.
I had one for the day last month and tbh its not really that much different from mine, engine, brakes and handling is all a little better but not massively, it does look a hell of a lot better though
it is widely recognised there is a stack of power to be released with a change of cans, change of sprockets and switching to map 2.
different strokes and all that init.
for what its worth I dont like IL4's very much, the only bike I've ever really wanted to get rid of was a K2 750.

now thats interesting, as when I asked they (the Aprilia people) said there is no "pre-set map switch" button on the Tuono like there was on the Dorsoduro/Shiver/Mana ...... perhaps thats why it felt flat
Most twins make good gains with a can/filter/pc2 ......... but my (122bhp @ rear wheel) motor felt stronger everywhere than the stock Tuono ........ though it might also have been the quiet cans lulling me into a false sense of security

As moose said, and with respect, I’d say you weren’t riding it in the way it was made to be ridden. Its not made to ‘pull’ out of junctions or roundabouts at low revs. Try braking later and harder, until your eyes start bulging! then throw it into the corner ( as its only little) and keep the revs above 9000 while digging pegs and knee in the tarmac as you accelerate out.. But whatever you do, don’t change gear until you hit 15000rpm. Easy

The gearbox - smooth and slick

The engine - Crap - On the SV, you open the throttle and you go and you are pushed to the back of the seat rest. On the CBR600RR you have nothing, nothing and then suddenly you see 130mph on the clock.
Braking - no engine braking!
Steering - This electronic steering damper does all the steering work for you and felt artificial.
Overall,I felt the bike was definitively faster and handled better (just) than the SV. However, the lack of instant throttle response and the crisp acceleration was absent. It felt as you were less engaged in the ride and the bike did most of the riding for you. It was certainly less fun than the SV. I came off a few junctions and corners and the bike felt as if it was restricted. It also lulls you into a false sense of security i.e. It feels more controlled at higher speeds when the dangers at that speed are equal on the SV or a CBR.
NOW WHAT? Well since I don't like the CBR6RR what can the SV be replaced with? I think I may just modify the suspension on the SV instead.
I have been fortunate to have owned and ridden most new bikes over the past 20 years, my first fast bike was a RD350LC and I am sure a few others on here have owned similar. Those sort of bikes needed their necks wringing to make good progress and for me thrashing a bike has always been part of riding. That's why for me the modern crop of 600 fours make such great bikes, you can thrash the b*ll*cks off of them which you can't do safely on a 1000 il4. Even though I have been riding larger bikes in recent years the I believe the 600's are the most fun.
Jumping from a twin to a four is a big difference and will take time for your riding style to adapt, I am sure that with time you would grow to appreciate this bikes capabilities, stick one on a track and it would totally murder your SV.
Someone else suggested a triple, might be worth a try I bought a 675 when they were first launched, only kept it for a short time and did a 1000 miles but it's a great tool!
We can all give you our opinions but to be honest get yourself on as many different bikes as you can there will be something out there that floats your boat.

It's already been said, but a bit unfair review regarding pulling away from corners/juntions. Power delivery is different than a twin - shift later, 7000rpm+ for the sorta acceleration your after. Different powerbands 'n' all that jazz.

Moose, does it not depend on how the injection is set up? It was just my experience jumping from the R6 to the K4 with the R6 being more raw and instant. Though I know that on the r6 the carbs were set up lovely for it where as the K4 was standard. ( Though my new one is set up by crecent
) and also differences between yamaha and suzuki. I thought there was a more direct line between throttle -> wire ->carbs and response than throttle -> wire -> little black box to injectors. Though I know I'm no engineer so am probably just talking testicles.

Kind of agree with what everyone else says really. With an IL4 you've got to really rev it - my 2007 R6 doesn't get going until you hit 8k. It can be a right pain if your not in the mood, but thats the way modern 600's are.
Sounds like you're used to the twin cylinder engine, it would take a realy long test ride to change your style to suit an IL4. Have you thought about a Ducati 749 - really cheap to buy now. Old 748? Classic iconic looks. Or a Honda Firestorm- seriously under rated bike and with some money spent on suspension, can keep up with most bikes. Also real cheap to buy used.
Also to add, I test rode a RR a couple of years ago (when they were quite new) and didn't like it. Really couldn't get on with the riding position.

Have you thought of the CBR600F? Much more of a road bike than the RR.

My old Kwak didn't pull properly till 8000rpm, it's not so much the fault of the bike, just the way it's set up clashing with your riding style.
Get a test ride on a 749s, one of the sporty Rotax Aprilias (Millie/Falco/Tuono, any will do for an idea) and a TL1000R imho, that'll give you a good spread of the sports twins.

Sounds like the bike might have been a bit of a lemon or just not setup right, when I first test rode my Futura it had the stock map on it and was frankly horrible to ride below 70, suprisingly the dealer (Keep in mind this was the big aprilia dealer in the region) had no knowledge of the update meaning I had to go dig up the Aprilia part number for them to go get it.
The bike being wheezy definately doesn't sound right though, even with the hugely restrictive OE system on my RST, if anything gunning it has me wishing I had another 1000rpm before it hits the redline again

You are right, the engine is just too smooth. I like the feeling of sliding down the seat when I open the throttle because it feels like I am going quickly (even if I am not.) I have been told by a few other people to try the GSXR but the zx636 maybe better as it has more midrange.
Why did you choose a GSXR over another r6 funky?
without meaning to be rude,can i suggest opening the throttle a little harder as in my biking experience the cbr6rr should far out accelerate a sv650 and in a more exciting way. my 6rr was as quick round oulton as my zx10 and was a better handling bike and was more than capable of lofting the front end up on the power.
