Would anyone like to change my Piston Rings?

Post by Funky »

My Piston rings have gone and I have low compression in a couple of the cylinders which means all the gas is escaping on the stroke. Would anyone like to change my Piston Rings for a fee? All the the head seals etc have been done by SP.

Please please please...

How much is all this costing? Maybe worth picking up a whole engine...

It might not just be a case of changing the rings ! The bore might need doing as well mate !

You could go the fresh engine route or rebuild yours !

Piston rings are easy, and rather cheap toooo! Cost 100 for all my rings, its an absolute [bar steward] getting the head back on though!!
I would, but I already volunteered my services to my boss, its easier with teh engine out too, well on my bike it was!

I'd go down the get a new engine route, then either rebuild yours and sell it on or do what i do and keep it for spares. I get a few people of the SV forum asking me if i got this or that and if i got more then 1, i sell it to them

Or......

Buy another engine and swap it in so you can ride the damn thing, rebuild yours and either swap back (so log book etc., match ) and flog the other again - if you are in the "riding" season by then, and buy at the right price, you might even cover some of your rebuild cost

I would offer to help, but with what the wife has planned for me DIY wise, and what I haven't done with my own bike yet, or hers, I don't think I ought to be taking on anything else

Hmm, well I'm just spending a shed load of money on the engine as I've just got all the valve seals, head gasket etc done (even though it turned out to be the piston rings) so I don't particularly want to shell out another 300 squids on an engine when I can buy a set of piston rings for 90 squids...plus a bit of money to a kind merciful soul..

from what you've said about it funky, I'd be kicking up with the shop over the fact that you have got to pull the motor apart again and they didnt pick up on where the problem was in the first place, and now its gotta be torn apart again.

ask em what the results of the "wet" compression test they did were like - they should have done this, and it should have indicated to them it wasnt the head gasket if its bore/ring wear.

Did you manage to find out from Andrew if he did the stem seals when he tore the engine apart before? if he did, I'd be amazed if they needed doing again already

Ye, i'm going to kick up a little bit of a stick as when I called, danny did say 'It's what we feared in the beginning' so they should have tested for that. I bought a full set of Piston rings today from CMS so they'll hopefully be here soon ready for a certain Angel to fit them. When that's done the bike is going to run saweeet... I hope...
