I suppose the positive you can take from this is that you have the bike back.
Someone tried to break into my car in the local car park once. I spotted, the following morning, that the lock barrel had been smashed in with a screwdriver. There was no CCTV to draw on so I spoke to the neighbours and it turned out some of them had the same thing happen to them. I contacted the local MP with letters of the local residents, including yours truely and hey presto, the lobby for CCTV installation went ahead.
I can now park my car in the local car park without the worry I had before.
Basically what I'm trying to say is, if you feel strongly about it, maybe you should contact someone who can do something about it. If a local MP wants to be favourable, they'll listen to strength in numbers.

but seriously, it does work. It just depends how much you want to do something about it. You could just sit back until it happens to someone else.
