Numberplate Sizes

Post by Jonny »

Just looking on the get to get a numberplate for my gsxr. (The old one was an illegal size)

My question, what sizes will go through the MOT? Does it have to be 9" by 7" ? Or can I get away with 8" by 6"?

(it needs to have the GB/Euro sticker)

I was loooking at http://www.impactshowplates.co.uk/

Cheers

I use a 8x6 with 50mm charachters, have never had a problem with MOT's, and never even been sniffed at by the boys in blue serge :D

I've always worked on the theory that from aesthetic principles the number plate width should never be bigger than the rear tyre 8)

I've got a 9x7 cos I've got an undertray so it acts as a bit of a mudguard to stop so much muck getting on the Mrs

I wouldn't go any smaller than the next size down though cos you don't want to give plod an excuse to pull you over

A legal number should have the BS code printed on it.

In the eyes of the law, if it hasn't got it, then it it's not legal.

My plate doesn't have one, and the letters are about 4mm smaller than they should be.

Bike cops are really picky, and tell me I need to change, but the last patrol car said it doesn't look legal, but I should change the black bolts to yellow to make it easier to read.

I don't have a problem with that, any time I see I bike cop I tend to do a u turn on the spot and find a different way to get to where I am going. 3 times I have been near one, I have been pulled over. Been dodging them over since

I've got 2 plates.
One nice slightly smaller one for every day riding that makes the rear end look good (and I've never been pulled yet for it).
The other plate is the fully road legal tea tray sized lump that came with the bike and gets refitted for special occassions - the MOT

well, my matre was telling my he went through mot wiht a 4X6. the mot'er just said well i aint bothered noting to do wiht me, dosent matter what size it is aslong as the bikes got one it passes the mot. as it is classed as a traffic offence and not and not an mot requirement. so what ever. best thing to do is go and ask the fella in the mot place. simple as.

people aslways ask questions about mot's and things. but at the end of the day doesnt matter what we say its up to the mot inspector. so insted of asking us justy go and ask them directly. they will be honest and tell u what they are looking for.

should never be affraid to ask. they wont fail u on the mot just for asking what they expect. if they do, they are front bottom.

its only a £30 fine for no plate or £60 and 3 points for a small plate

also be careful at this time of year, we went on the plymouth easter egg run last year and the cops turned up and straight away went round making reg notes of everyone with a small plate on , they werent bothered about the guy who had metal showing out fo his tyre because he had a standard plate, it wasnt a fun charity ride that day !!
